Tips for safe riding
- Observe all regional traffic laws and cycling regulations. Observe the regulations regarding
the registration of bikes and riding on pavements, laws on the use of cycle lanes, etc. Ob-
serve the regulations regarding helmets and child seats as well as special traffic rules for cy-
clists. It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the laws and regulations and to
comply with them.
- You share the road or cycle path with motorised road users, pedestrians as well as other cy-
clists. Respect their rights. Always switch on your lights.
- Ride with foresight. Always assume that others may not see you. Look ahead and be pre-
pared for the following:
- Vehicles braking or turning onto your road in front of you and vehicles coming from behind.
- Opening doors of parked vehicles.
- Pedestrians stepping into the road.
- Children or pets playing near the road.
- Potholes, gullies, railway tracks, expansion joints, road or pavement structures, debris or
other obstacles that may cause you to swerve into the opposite lane or that may become en-
tangled in your bike or otherwise cause you to lose control and cause an accident.
- Ride in the designated cycle lanes and cycle paths or as close to the edge of the road as pos-
sible, in the direction of traffic flow or as provided for by regional regulations.
- Stop at stop signs and traffic lights. Brake at road junctions and look both ways. Remember
that cyclists are always the weaker road users. Cyclists always lose out in traffic collisions
with cars.
- Use standard hand signals when turning or stopping.
- Never wear headphones when riding. These drown out traffic sounds and sirens, distract you
from the traffic and can get caught up in the moving parts of the bike, causing you to lose
control.
