Handling Songs with a USB Storage
Device (CLP-240)
You can handle User songs (save, export and delete) with a USB stor-
age device. You can also format the device or media.
About Save and Export
Save
You can save three User songs in the instrument to the USB storage device as a single
file (User file). These songs can be saved to a container” (or memory location) in the
USB storage device. 100 containers are available — A00-A99.
Since the User songs are saved in a special Clavinova format, they cannot be played
back on other instruments, including other Clavinovas.
With this file format, you can re-record each part on the CLP-240. Songs cannot be
directly played back from the USB storage device; they must first be loaded to the
instrument.
For details on the save operation, see “Saving Songs” on page 36.
Export
You can export a User song in the instrument to the USB storage device as a single file
(SMF song). Songs can be exported to a “container” (or memory location) in the USB
storage device. 100 containers are available — S00-S99.
Since the User songs are saved in SMF format, they can be played back on other instru-
ments, including other Clavinovas.
With this file format, you cannot re-record on the CLP-240. Songs in this format can be
directly played back from the USB storage device, and do not need to be previously
loaded to the instrument.
For details on the export operation, see “Exporting a Song in SMF format” on page 37.
NOTE
For details on connecting a USB
storage device, see page 58.
NOTE
Before handling songs with a
USB storage device, make sure
that the device is not protected.
If the device is protected, you
cannot access it.
NOTE
If there is not enough capacity left
on the USB storage device to
save or export the data, an appro-
priate message will appear on the
display and you will not be able to
save or export the data. Delete
unwanted files from the device to
make more memory available
(page 38), or use another device.
NOTE
The “A” indication at the top of the
User file name means “All” — all
three songs in the instrument are
saved into one container.
NOTE
The file numbers which can be
handled in this instrument are 100
files.
User file numbers: A00-A99
SMF song numbers: S00-S99

TERMINOLOGY
SMF (Standard MIDI File):
The SMF (Standard MIDI File) for-
mat is one of the most common
and widely compatible sequence
formats used for storing sequence
data. There are two variations:
Format 0 and Format 1. A large
number of MIDI devices are com-
patible with SMF Format 0, and
most commercially available MIDI
sequence data is provided in SMF
Format 0. The SMF format for
sequence files allows you to
exchange song data between dif-
ferent sequencers. User songs
recorded on the CLP-240 are
exported as SMF Format 0.
