Touching up paintwork
08
Paintwork
Paint is an important part of the car’s rust-
proofing and should therefore be checked
regularly. To avoid the onset of rust, dam-
aged paintwork must be rectified immediate-
ly. The most common types of paintwork
damage are stone chips, scratches, and
marks on the edges of wings and doors.
Colour code
Data plate
It is important that the correct colour is used.
The colour code number (1) is shown on the
data plate, see page 242.
Stone chips and scratches
Before touching up paintwork, the car must
be clean and dry and at a temperature
above 15 °C.
Materials
Primer in a can
Paint in a can or touch-up pen
•Brush
•Masking tape
Minor stone chips and scratches
If the stone chip has not penetrated to the
bare metal and there is an undamaged colour
coat, you can paint straight after cleaning the
damaged area.
If the stone chip has penetrated to the
bare metal
Fasten a piece of masking tape over the
damaged surface. Then remove the tape,
removing any paint residue.
Stir the primer well and apply using a fine
brush or matchstick. Apply paint using a
brush once the primer is dry.
For scratches, proceed as above, but
mask around the damaged area to protect
the undamaged paintwork.
After a few days, polish the touched-up
areas. Use a soft rag and a small amount
of lapping paste.
