71 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
Places to Avoid Lubrication
•With some frames, the manufacturer may recommend not greasing the seatpost. As
an example, on Trek OCLV frames, an insert in the seat tube holds the seatpost. A
composite sleeve bonded into the seat tube prevents corrosion, and any grease
may cause the seatpost to slip, even with correct seatpost binder torque. Check
with the manufacturer.
•Bottom bracket axle/crank arm interface . Avoid greasing the spindle of a bottom
bracket with a square tapered spindle, as this may allow the crank arm to insert
an incorrect distance onto the bottom bracket spindle. This can cause crank
arm clearance problems with the frame, or incorrect chainline with the specified
components. A light oil will adequately prevent any unwanted corrosion in most
cases.
•Some forks have a steerer made of carbon fiber composite. With these forks, you
should not apply any lubricant to the steerer when installing a stem.
Do not apply carbon prep between the stem and a carbon fork steerer. Gravity,
heat, and vibration work together to allow the carbon prep to move down the
steerer into the headset spacers. Carbon prep is somewhat abrasive and due to
the slight motion involved with the headset spacers, carbon prep can wear away
steerer material, causing the fork to lose strength.
Carbon Fiber Parts Lubrication
• For any interface with a part made of carbon fiber composite, avoid grease or other
lubricants on clamping surfaces, such as between the stem and handlebar, or on
the seatpost inside the frame. Before assembling a carbon part, clean both the
part and its mating surface with rubbing alcohol and a shop rag; clean until the rag
shows no discoloration.
• The carbon part can be assembled in a clean, dry state. As an alternative, for
some applications we recommend some brands of special carbon prep products.
However, do not apply carbon prep to a carbon fork steerer. Although the normal
application on a steerer would be under the stem, gravity, heat, and vibration work
together to allow the carbon prep to move down the steerer into the headset.
Carbon prep is somewhat abrasive and due to the slight motion involved with the
headset, carbon prep can wear away steerer material, causing the fork to lose
strength.
