21 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
Crankset and Bottom Bracket
The crankset connects the pedals to the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket is the
axle and bearing set that allows the crankset to rotate.
Tools required
• 5mm allen wrench
• 8mm allen wrench
To inspect the crankset
1. Check that the crank arms are firmly attached.
• Some crankarms use a mounting bolt to pull the crankarm onto the bottom bracket
spindle, some designs uses pinch bolts (Figure 46). With multiple pinch bolts,
tighten alternating bolts in small increments.
2. Check that the bottom bracket is properly installed and adjusted. Align the closest
crankarm with the seat tube, pointing up. Grasp the crank arm and attempt to
move it laterally, to and from the seat tube. Do the same with the other crankarm.
Any lateral movement indicates either the bottom bracket or the crankarms are not
tightened sufficiently.
If the crank feels or sounds loose, either the crank is loose or the bottom bracket
bearings need to be adjusted. Follow the instructions to adjust the bottom bracket
on page 64.
To inspect the chain
1. Find the installation point.
2. Make sure that the installation pin is fully inserted, the chain plates are not
deformed, and the link rotates freely (Figure 47).
