7.3. Breeding Brine Shrimps
Aninterestingexperimentisbreedingandobservingthedevelopmentofbrineshrimp,
also called Sea Monkeys (Artemia Salina) under the microscope. These animals are Fairy
shrimps naturally occurring in salt-water lakes.
• Theshrimpscanbebredintheenclosedbreedingtank,ajamjarorasmall
aquarium.
Itisveryimportantthattheusedaquarium/usedtankiscleanandfreefrom
contaminants, such as residue of cleaning agents or similar.
Prior to use thus clean the tank thoroughly with plenty of tap water without cleaning
agent and, where necessary (e.g. when using old aquariums still soiled), a cleaning
sponge.Important:neverusecleaningagents!
• Afterthoroughcleaningofthetank,rinseitthoroughlywithwater.Newtanks
only have to be rinsed thoroughly with water.
• Onlyplacetankindesignatedarea.Fillwithdistilledorboiledwater.Addapprox.
15-20 g of sea salt or iodine-free table salt. Do not use iodinated table salt, or
similar.Ensurethatthewatertemperaturehasreachedapprox.22°to26°Cbefore
releasing the eggs.
• Duringtherstdaysitisimportantthatthetankismovedaslittleaspossibleto
ensure that none of the eggs stick to the walls of the basin above the water line and
thus do not hatch.
• Coverthetank(butensureadequateventilation!)andensurethatthetankisex
posedtoalotoflightoverthenextdays.Thewatertemperatureshouldbeaprox.
22°to26°C.
• Donotoverheatthetankasthiscouldleadtorapidbacteriaformationwhichcould
kill the animals.
Caution !
The supplied Eosin dye can cause irritation when coming into contact with the
eyes (R36). Do not inhale the dust! If agent comes into contact with the eyes, rinse
thoroughly with water and consult a doctor!
