Waarom Memory Sticks™?
Sony streeft ernaar de wereld van communicatie uit te breiden door de portabiliteit van digitale gegevens
te bevorderen. Dit streven heeft geleid tot de ontwikkeling van de Memory Stick™, waarmee digitale
apparaten onmiddellijk met elkaar kunnen worden verbonden. Met een Memory Stick™ kunt u gegevens
downloaden van elk compatibel apparaat, en ze vervolgens in één keer en onmiddellijk overdragen naar
een ander compatibel apparaat.
De voornaamste voordelen van de Memory Stick™ zijn:
❑ Compactheid: met afmetingen van slechts 21,5 mm (B) x 2,8 mm (H) x 50 mm (D) kunnen compatibele
producten ook klein en licht zijn met een aantrekkelijk design.
❑ Capaciteit: de opslagcapaciteit is veel groter dan die van een diskette.
❑ Beveiliging: met het wispreventienokje kunt u voorkomen dat u uw gegevens per ongeluk zou wissen.
❑ Veelzijdigheid: de opslagcapaciteit gaat van 4MB tot 128MB (dezelfde capaciteit als 88 diskettes).
❑ Betrouwbaarheid: om de hardware en de gegevens op de Memory Stick™ te beschermen, werd het
aantal terminals beperkt tot slechts 10 pinnen. Dit en de algemene robuuste structuur maken dat de
Memory Stick™ langer meegaat dan andere opslagapparaten.
❑ Duurzaamheid: een Memory Stick™ kan duizenden keren worden gebruikt.
❑ Voorwaartse compatibiliteit: de huidige Memory Sticks™ zijn ontworpen om compatibel te zijn met
toekomstige producten en Memory Sticks™ met een grotere opslagcapaciteit.
De toekomst van de Memory Stick™
Het potentieel van de Memory Stick™ is vrijwel onbeperkt, en het aantal compatibele producten neemt
snel toe, zowel in persoonlijke als professionele kringen.
De introductie van de 256 MB en 512 MB Memory Stick™ wordt verwacht in 2002, en een Memory Stick™
met een capaciteit van 1 gigabyte wordt verwacht in 2003. Bovendien zal de transmissiesnelheid van de
Memory Stick™ worden verhoogd om de toenemende capaciteit aan te kunnen. Tegen eind 2002 zal de
transmissiesnelheid van de Memory Stick™ met 800% gestegen zijn tot een maximale snelheid van
20MB/sec.
