range

echo
sounding.
(It
should
be
noted
that
an
echo
can be
obtained
at
short
range
in
air
for
test
purposes,
but
due
to
the
slower
speed
of
sound
in
air
the
echoes
will indi-
cate
a
depth
of
approximately
four
times
greater
than
in
water.)

switch
to
one
of
the
three
ranges
and
the
Light
Emitting
Diode
will
flash
at
"
0"
on
the diaJ.
Advance
the "gain"
(Sensitivety)
control
in
a clockwise
direction
until
a
further
light
flash
appears
on
the
dia!.
Thi

indication
is
the
depth
of
water
ben
e
ath
the
face
of
the
transducer.

If
the
"gain"
control
is
advanced
more
than
is necessary
multiple
echoes
of
the
true
depth
will
appear.
Reducing
the
"
gain"
control
uutil
onl y the first
echo
is
obtained
will
improve
clarity
of
reading
and
sa\'e
battery
power.
To
locate
fish,
advancc
lhe
"gain"
c
ontrol
beyond
the
normal
setting
required
for
depth
indicati011 onl y.
Fish
will be
indicated
by
random
flashes
at
their
appropriate
depth.
Il
should
be
noted
that
an
echo
return
from
fish
depends
011
the size
of
the
air
sack
and
varies
greatly
with
different
types
of
fish.
The
efficient
performance
of
all echo
sounders
depends
on
the
nature
of
the
sca bed.
For
instance, a
hard,
rocky
or
firm
sand
sea
bed
wil! reflect
back
uItra-
sonic
sound
waves
extremely
weil.
The
charac-
teristic
return
echo
from
a sea bed
of
this
type
wi
II
be
shown
as a firm flash
or
light
on
the
dial
at
the
appropriate
depth.
On
the
other
hand,
deep
mud
or
large
amounts
of
keI
p wil! give a
weaker
reflection
and
produce
a
wider
more
in-
dterminate
flash.
With
practice
it
is
therefore
possible
to
ascertain
not
only
the
actual
depth
,
bul
also
the
type
of sea bed.
Under
normal
condi
tions
the
Seafarer
600
is
of
ample
power
to
reach
the
maximum
depth
of
100
falhoms
(200
metres)
marked
on
the
dial.
DEPTH ALARM OPERATION
An
audio
alarm
is
provided
on
the
instrument
10
give a waflling
when
the
depth
of
water
below
the
transducer
falls
below
a
pre-set
level.
To
set
the
depth
at
which
the
alarm
operates,
th
e
"alarm"
control
is
rotated
clockwise until
the
forward
edge
of
the
flashing
alarm
depth
indicator
on
the
dial
corresponds
to
the
depth
of
water
below
the
transducer
for
which
a
warning
is
Iequired.

transducer
is
mounted
in
a
vessel with
projections
below
the
transducer,
such
as a
k.eel
or
twin
biJge keels, etc.,
then
the
alarm
depth
setting
must
take

account
this
additional
depth,

The
alarm
depth
can
be set
on
any
range
up
to
the
equivalent
of
approximately
60 feet (20
metres)
but
the
most
accurate
settings will
be
achieved
on
the
shallow
water
range
scale
"B
".
If
the
depth
of
water
below
the
transducer
is
le
ss
than
the
depth
shown
by
the
alarm
depth
indicator
the
alarm
will
sound.
The
alarm
can
only
be
siJenced
by
reducing
the
alarm
depth
indication
by
rotating
the
alarm
contro
l in an
anti-c\ockwise
duralion.
i.e. to reduce the
alarm
depth
setting.
lt
should
be noted,
howe
ver,
that
t
he
alarm
will
not
operate
below a
depth
of
approximately
3 fe
et
(1
metre).
The
alarm
can
also
be
stopped
by sail ing
into
de
eper
water.

SWITCH
The
"Hi
gh Lo\\ "

Output
Switch
controls
the
power
output
to
the
Seafarer
600 trans-
ducer.
The
switch is
provided
to reduce
batter
y
power
on
the
general
purpo
se
and
shallow
water
scales.
The
"Iow"
power
position
should
be
used
for
normal
operation
on
the
gener
al
purpose
and
shallow
water
"A"
and
"B"
sc
al
es
.
The
"high"
power
position
should
be used on (he
deep
water
"C"
scale
or
when the sea bed is of a
soft
or
weedy
nature
giving a
poor
reftection.
It
is also
recommended
that
th
e "
high"
power pos
C>ti
on be
used to
reduce
the effect
of
electri
ca
l i
nlerfcrence
by
allowing
a
reduction
in
the
se
tting
of (he gain
con trol.
Tbis
should
be
tried
before
reso
ni
ng 10
the
use
of
suppres
sion
control.
NOISE SUPPRESSION CONTROL
This
switch
introduces
a su
ppression
circuit
to
reduce the effect
of
electrical
interference
on the
echo
sounder
from
ignition
systems,
generators
and
electrical
equipment
generally.
The
control
should
'be
used
sparingly
and
it
is
recommended
that
the
"high
power"
output
position
be
·.
selected
first
before
resorting
to
the use
of
the
noi
se
suppression
switch
in
an
electrically
noisy
envir-
onment.
With
"
high"
power
output
from
the
transducer
the
receiver
sensitivity
or
"ga
in"
can
be
reduced
, thus
reducing
the effect
of
interfer-
ence.
It
should
be
noted
that
when the
suppress
switch
is set to
"on"
the
brilliance
of
the
LED
Aash
on
the
dial is
reduced
on the
'B
' range.
