Setting leading or trailing ﬂ ash

and sync speed

Leading or trailing ﬂ ash can be selected

either with the aid of the Variable Defaults

(see preceding section) or with Master-

Ware:

» Selecting “1 Syn“: The ﬂ ash will ﬁ re

after the shutter has opened, that is at

the beginning of exposure.

» Selecting “2 Syn“: The ﬂ ash will ﬁ re 3

ms before the shutter closes, that is at

the end of exposure.

Due to the use of between-the-lens

shutters, ﬂ ash photography is possible at

any shutter speed. At speeds faster than

/250 s there will be no difference between

leading and trailing sync.

Manual ﬂ ash control

without an SCA adapter

Be sure to switch your ﬂ ash unit off before

connecting it to the hot-shoe contact or

PC terminal. In this case, the camera is

unable to detect the ﬂ ash and will there-

fore respond as if no ﬂ ash were attached.

Set the aperture on the lens according to

the requirements of the ﬂ ash unit.

Automatic computer ﬂ ashes use their

built-in sensor to control ﬂ ash output for

an aperture selected on the ﬂ ash unit and

manually transferred to the camera. Simp-

ler types of ﬂ ash unit will require the aper-

ture to be varied as a function of ﬂ ash

distance (from a table on the unit). For

details, see the instructions supplied with

your ﬂ ash unit.

Alternatively, the working aperture

required can also be found using the pre-

ﬂ ash mode available in manual ﬂ ash con-

trol. See “Preﬂ ash mode“.
