Questions about Highway
What is a multiplex?
A multiplex is a group or block of DAB stations broadcast by the same operator. In the UK there are two national multiplexes,
which broadcast the same group of stations across the country, and numerous local multiplexes specific to geographical regions,
for example, Switch London. You can view which multiplex the radio station is in by changing the ‘Info display’ mode to ‘Multiplex
name’ (
page 14). The range of local multiplexes you can receive may change as you drive into or out of a particular region.
Performing an autotune (page 10) will always update the station list with new stations found.
What should I do if I lose reception...
The message ‘Station not available’ or a ‘burbling’ noise means that the DAB signal for the current station is weak.
...For a national station?
Many DAB stations are broadcast on a national multiplex and are available, depending on DAB coverage, across the whole of
the UK. If you begin to lose reception you may be passing into a weaker signal coverage area for the national multiplex.
...For a local station?
If you are tuned to a local DAB station, you may have left the signal coverage area for the local DAB multiplex on which the
station is broadcast and you therefore need to select another station in a different multiplex.
What happens if I drive into a tunnel?
The DAB signal will weaken in a tunnel, causing the audio to fade down and ‘Station not available’ to appear. On exiting the
tunnel, Highway will reacquire the station, gradually fading the audio back up again. You can switch off the ‘Fade on burble’ setting
(
page 15).
Questions about DAB reception
Tip
Interference in the FM frequency sounds like hissing, crackling or intruding
music - different from the ‘burbling’ sound of a weak DAB signal.
