5 Safety instructions
DANGER
All applicable rules concerning work safety, the safety
guidelines stated in the chapter Safety Instructions,
and all other generally applicable health and work
principles must be adhered to without exception. The
manufacturer is not liable for any damages caused
by unauthorised alterations to this machine.
5.1 General safety instructions
- Before using the machine, carefully and thor-
oughly read the attached safety instructions and
this user manual.
- Save all included documents and never pro-
vide the machine to others without these docu-
ments.
5.2 Safety warnings for the
SSP 200 EB sword saw
- Keep all parts of your body clear of the
saw chain when the machine is turned on.
Before turning on the sword saw, make
sure the chain is not touching anything. A
second’s distraction when the sword saw is on
may cause your clothes or body get caught in
the saw chain.
- Always hold the chain saw with your right
hand on the rear handle and your left
handon the front handle. Holding the chain
saw with a reversed hand con guration increas-
es the risk of personal injury and should never
be done.
- Use eye and ear protection. Use of addi-
tional protective equipment for the head,
hands, legs and feet is recommended. Ad-
equate protective clothing reduces the risk of
bodily injury from ying particles or through
accidental contact with the saw chain.
- Do not use the sword saw in a tree. Us-
ing the sword saw in a tree may lead to bodily
injury. The machine is not designed for such
use.
- Always stand in the correct position and
work with the sword saw only if you are on
a solid, safe, even surface. Any slippery or
unstable surfaces, such as ladders, etc., might
cause loss of balance or control over the sword
saw.
- Carry the sword saw with the guide bar
away from your body and the safety cover
mounted.
- Follow the instructions for lubrication,
chain tension and component replacement.
An incorrectly tightened or greased chain may
break or increase the risk of kickback.
- Keep the grips dry, clean and clear of oil
and grease. Greasy or oily handles are slippery
and may cause loss of control.
- Cut wood only. Do not use the sword saw
for other purposes than those described in
this manual. For instance: Do not use the
sword saw to cut plastic, masonry or non-
wood building materials. Any use of the sword
saw for purposes other than those described in
this manual may cause a hazardous situation.
- Hold the power tools on insulated gripping
surfaces only, because the saw chain can
come into contact with hidden power lines
or with its own power cord. Touching the
saw chain with a “live” electrical conductor may
cause the exposed metal parts of the electrome-
chanical tool to become “live” and lead to injury
of the user by electric shock.
- We recommend using a residual-current device
with actuating current of 30 mA or less.
- Carry the chain saw by the front handle
with the chain saw switched off and away
from your body. When transporting or stor-
ing the chain saw always t the guide bar
cover. Proper handling of the chain saw will
reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with
the moving saw chain.
Causes of kickback and how to avoid them:
Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the
guide bar touches an object, or when the wood
closes and grips the saw chain inside the cut. In
some cases a touch to the tip may cause instant
kickback, throwing the guide bar upward and back
toward the user. Gripping the saw chain along the
tip of the guide bar may pull the guide bar back
toward the user. Each of these reactions can cause
loss of control over the saw and may lead to serious
bodily injury. Do not rely exclusively on the safety
devices built into your sword saw. As a sword saw
user, you must take multiple precautions to per-
form your cutting operations without accident or
injury. Kickback is caused by improper use of the
tool or incorrect working methods or conditions,
and can be avoided by properly following the in-
structions below:
- Hold rmly with your thumbs and ngers
around the sword saw grip, with both
hands on the saw, and position your body
and arms for resistance to kickback. Kick-
back can be controlled by the user, provided all
relevant safety measures are followed. Do not
let go of the chain saw.
- Do not reach or cut above shoulder height.
This prevents unwanted tip contact, and pro-
vides better control over the sword saw in un-
expected situations.
- Use only manufacturer-speci ed replace-
ment bars and chains. Any unsuitable re-
placement bars and chains may cause kickback
or chain breakage.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for
sharpening and maintenance of the saw
chain. A drop in the depth gauge might lead to
increased kickback.
