N 8410 - Electret HiFi stereo microphone
Of very high quality, this stereo microphone com-
plies
throughout
with
the requirements of the
HiFi
Standard
DIN 45 500.
In this microphone, use is made of the 'electret
condensor' principle. According to this principle,
the diaphragm of these microphones is made of a
thin
synthetic
foil
which, having been specially
treated, has the properties of
an
'electret', which is
to say that it
possesses
a permanent electrostatic
charge.
This
provides
a
microphone which
has
the excellent
properties of the professional condensor micro-
phones,
but
without
the disadvantages of that type
of microphone
(need
for
a
high polarisation voltage,
vulnerability etc).
This
stereo microphone consists of two unidirec-
tional ('cardioid'.fig. 10) electret
HiFi
microphones,
each
having a jack plug of 6.3 mm diameter (fig. 9).
Also
supplied are two foamrubber
windshields,
two
stable
stands, two adjustable microphone clamps
with
fixing
screws
and a stereo
floor
stand adapter.
All parts are packed in a deluxe storage cassette
(fig.
1).
With the aid of these provisions, the micro-
phones can be
used:
- hand held (fig. 7);
- mounted on one or two table stands (fig. 4);
- mounted on one or two
floor
stands (fig. 6).
Supply
- fig. 2
Remove the top of the microphone and insert in
each
microphone one 1.5 Volt 'penlight' battery
(type
R6
or
U7
or
equivalent),
this for powering of the
built-in
pre-amplifier.
Note on the paper, which can be removed
from
the battery compartment, the date on which a new
battery
is
inserted and replace the paper. When this
is
done, the battery
can
always
be replaced in
good
time. A fresh battery in the microphone will suftice
for about one year, regardless of how
often
the
microphone is
used.
The batteries need not be removed when the
microphones are not in
use.
To avoid battery leak-
age,
however, it is recommended to remove the
battery when it has been in the microphone for
longer than a year.
Table stand mounting - figs. 3 and 4
The
microphone clamps can be mounted on the
table stands (and also on the stereo
floor
stand
adapter - fig.
6)
with
the
aid
of the
screws
which
can
be
found
turned in the clamps.
There
is
one stud
in
the table
stand
and
there
are
five
holes
in the
base
of the microphone ciamp, so the
microphones can be mounted at five angles, each
differing45°.
When the damp
is
mounted, the microphone
can
be
attached to the damp by simply pushing it
from
above
into
the ciamp.
The
microphones
can
be mounted either together in
the stereo table stand, or one microphone in the
stereo
table stand and the other in the single table
stand.
Adjustable
microphone clamps - fig. 5
If the knurled
screws
on
both
sides
of the ciamp are
loosened,
the angle of incllnation can be adjusted.
When the desired inclination is found, this position
can
be fixed by
turning
the knurled
screws
home
tight.
Floor
stand mounting - fig. 6
The
microphones can be mounted on
floor
stands
with
%" (inch)
Whitworth
thread. The clamps can
either be turned directly on the
floor
stand or use
can
be made of the stereo
floor
stand
adapter which
is
turned on the
floor
stand, while the microphone
clamps
are mounted on the adapter
with
the aid of
the
screws
supplied.
Windshields
- fig. 7
When the microphones are used outdoors or at
close
range,
disturbing
noise
such
as
that
caused
by
the wind can be prevented by sliding the wind
shields
supplied over the
front
of the microphones.
When
the microphones
are
hand
held,
the
use
of the
wind shields is recommended.
Stereo
positloning - fig. 8
When making stereo recordings, the microphone
for the
left
channel must be directed to the
left
side
and that for the
right
channel to the
right
side of the
sound
source.
The greaterthe separation between
the
left
and
right
sides
of the sound source, or the
nearer
each
microphone
is
brought
to its respective
side
of the sound source, the more pronounced is
the stereo effect (the apparent separation between
left
and right).
When
both
microphones
are
mounted
on
the stereo
table stand or on the stereo
floor
stand adapter, it is
important
for
getting
the
optimum
stereo effect that
the microphones are positioned at an angle of 90°.
Addltional hints for use
For
speech,
the best distance between
mouth
and
microphone is about 30 cm. In noisy surroundings
and when using the wind shield it is recommended
to speak closer to the microphone.
