brewing method from Philips with convenient coff ee
pods from Douwe Egber ts, a vailable in different b lends
of ne roast and ground coffee. T ogether they make sure
you only get the v er y best in avour and aroma from the
coffee.

brewing system are perfectly matched to ensure that the
best taste and aroma are extracted from the coffee .
T o optimise the taste of the coffee , keep the following
aspects in mind:
Fr esh water
Use fresh water ever y day . If you ha ve not used the coffee
machine for three days, y ou have to ush it with fresh
water before you use it again (see section ‘Flushing’ in
chapter ‘Cleaning’).

coffee pods that ha ve been specially
developed b y Douwe Egber ts for y our SENSEO
®
coffee
machine for a full, round taste . Douwe Egber ts SENSEO
®
coffee pods stay fresh longer if y ou close the package
with the keep-fresh seal after use or if you store them in
a storage container .
A clean machine
Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO
®
coffee machine
regular ly (see chapters ‘Cleaning’ and ‘Descaling’). Remov e
used coffee pods after brewing. If a used pod has been
left in the coffee machine and y ou have not used the
machine for some time, ush the machine before y ou use
it again (see section ‘Flushing’ in chapter ‘Cleaning’).

Important
Read these instr uctions for use carefully bef ore you use
the machine and sav e them for future reference.
Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of
the machine corresponds to the local mains v oltage
before y ou connect the machine.
If the mains cord is damaged, it m ust be replaced
by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips
or similarly qualied persons in order to a void a
hazard.
T o prev ent unexpected contact with hot water ,
alwa ys mak e sure the lid of the SENSEO
®
machine
is properl y locked befor e you start using the
machine.
Nev er put normal ground coffee or use torn pods
in the SENSEO
®
machine, as this causes it to
become blocked.
Do not use the machine in combination with
a transformer , as this could cause hazar dous
situations.
Put the machine on a at, stable surface. Nev er let
the machine operate unattended.
Do not use the machine at altitudes higher
than 2200 metres abo ve sea lev el.
The machine does not work at temperatur es below
10°C.
Flush the coffee machine with fresh water bef ore
you use it for the rst time (see cha pter ‘Preparing
the machine for use’). This causes the boiler to ll
with water , which is essential for the machine to
work pr operly .

This appliance is not intended for use b y persons
(including children) with r educed physical, sensor y
or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they ha ve been giv en super vision
or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a
person responsible for their saf ety .
Children should be supervised to ensure that they
do not pla y with the appliance.
It is very important that you descale your
SENSEO
®
machine ev er y 3 months to pre vent
malfunctioning. For the cor rect procedur e, see
chapter ‘Descaling’.
Nev er interrupt the descaling pr ocess!
Alwa ys use the corr ect descaling mixture, i.e. 50
grams citric acid to 1 litre tap water .
Nev er turn your SENSEO
®
machine on its
side. Alwa ys keep it in upright position, also
during transport.
Electroma gnetic elds (EMF)
This Philips appliance complies with all standards
regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled
proper ly and in accordance with the instructions in this
instr uction manual, the appliance is safe to use according
to scientic evidence availab le today .
Preparing the machine f or use
Y ou cannot brew coffee if y ou ha ve not ushed the
SENSEO
®
coffee machine rst!
The ushing cycle causes the boiler to ll with water .
After this, the coffee machine is ready for use.
Flush the machine in the following wa y:
1 Remove the water r eser voir (Fig. 2).
2 Fill the water reservoir with cold water up to
the MAX indication and put it back onto the
machine. (Fig. 3)
3 Move the le ver upwards to r elease the lid (Fig. 4).
4 Open the lid (Fig. 5).
5 Put the 1-cup pod holder q or the 2-cup/1-
mug pod holder qq / w in the machine without
pod(s). (Fig. 6)
6 Close the lid and lock the lever (Fig. 7).
Note: Mak e sure you lock the lever pr operly. Push it do wn
until it snaps home with a clic k.
Note: Never ush the machine with the lid open. The lid
must be properly lock ed.
7 Put the plug in an earthed wall socket.
8 Put a bowl (with a capacity of at least 1500ml)
under the coffee spout to collect the water . (Fig. 8)
9 Press the on/off button I and subsequently pr ess
the 1-cup button q and the 2-cup/1-mug button
qq/ w briey at the same time. (Fig. 9)
The boiler lls itself with water from the water
reservoir . This takes some time (appr ox. 90 to 150
seconds). The machine switches off automatically
when the ushing cycle ends. During the ushing
cycle, the machine produces mor e noise than
during a regular br ewing cycle.
Note: Befor e you use the mac hine for the rst time, c lean
the coffee spout and the pod holders with hot water and
some washing-up liquid or in the dishw asher. Clean the
water reservoir thoroughly in hot w ater, if necessar y with
some washing-up liquid.
Now y our Philips SENSEO

coffee machine is ready for
use.
Bre wing coffee
1 Fill the water reservoir with cold water up to
the MAX indication and put it back onto the
machine. (Fig. 3)
Nev er pour milk, coffee, hot water or carbonated water
into the water reservoir .

want to make a cup of coffee.
2 Press the on/off button I . (Fig. 10)
The indicator light blinks while the water is heating up .
Heating up takes appro x. 90 seconds.
The coffee machine is ready f or use when the
indicator light burns continuously .
3 Move the le ver upwards to r elease the lid (Fig. 4).
4 Open the lid.
5 Place the appropriate pod holder in the machine.
Note: Mak e sure the pod holder is clean and the sieve in the
centre is not clogged, e.g. with loose coffee gr ounds .
If you want to mak e one cup of SENSEO
®
coffee,
use 1 coffee pod in combination with the 1-cup pod
holder q and the 1-cup button q. (Fig. 11)
If you want to mak e two cups or one m ug of
SENSEO
®
coffee, use 2 coffee pods in combination
with the deeper 2-cup/1-mug pod holder qq /
w and the 2-cup/1-mug button qq/ w. (Fig. 12)
6 Place the SENSEO
®
coffee pod(s) pr operly in the
centre of the pod holder , with the convex side
pointing downwards.

®
coffee pods fr om Douwe Egber ts
specially designed for your SENSEO
®
coffee machine for a
full and round taste.
Place 1 SENSEO
®
coffee pod in the 1-cup pod
holder q. (Fig. 13)
Place 2 SENSEO
®
coffee pods in the 2-cup/1-mug
pod holder qq / w. (Fig. 14)
Note: Mak e sure the coff ee in the pod(s) is evenly distributed
and press the pod(s) lightly into the pod holder .
Note: Never put normal gr ound coffee or use torn pods in
the SENSEO
®
machine , as this causes it to become blocked.
7 Close the lid and lock the lever (Fig. 7).
Always mak e sure the lid is proper ly locked. Push the
lever down until it snaps home with a click.
Nev er star t bre wing with the lid open. The lid m ust be
properl y closed.
8 Place one cup, tw o cups or one mug under the
spout openings (Fig. 15).
If you are using cups, make sure they ha ve a capacity of
approximately 150 ml. If y ou are using a mug, make sure
the mug has a capacity of appro ximately 280ml. Do not
use cups or mugs that are too large , as they will cause the
coffee to get cold more quickly .

right under the coffee spout with its tw o openings.
9 Press the button that indicates the number of cups
of SENSEO
®
coffee you want to br ew . (Fig. 16)

The SENSEO
®
coffee machine starts brewing.
The machine automatically supplies the optimal
amount of water .
Y ou can inter r upt the brewing process at any time
by pressing the on/off button I . If y ou switch the
machine back on after you ha ve interr upted the
brewing process, the machine does not complete the
interr upted brewing cycle .
Do not remov e the water reservoir during a br ewing
cycle, as this causes the machine to draw in air . When
this happens, the next cup will only be partly lled.
Note: If you only get a small quantity of coff ee or no coffee
at all out of the machine , you have not ushed the machine
properly bef ore rst use . As a result, the boiler is not or not
completely lled. Flush the machine properly (see chapter
‘Preparing the machine for use’) before you brew another
cup of coffee.
10 After use , lift the pod holder out of the machine
and remov e the coffee pod(s).
Be careful when you do this, for there ma y still be some
water/coffee on the coffee pod(s).
