21)If necessary, the load must be mounted with lights (if not integrated
in the bike carrier) and appropriate signage in compliance with the
regulations of the country in which the carrier is used.
22)You must always comply with local regulations when using the bike
carrier.
NOTES ON HOW TO INSTALL THE CARRIER
ON THE TOWBAR
1) The bike carrier is not suitable for towbars made entirely of
aluminium or GGG40 (cast iron).
2) The towball and its vertical support must be made of steel.
3) Bike carrier + load on the bike carrier must always be equal to or less
than the maximum load capacity of the towbar (this information is
available on the type approval document for the towbar and/or on
the vehicle registration document).
4) Before installing the bike carrier clean the towball thoroughly to
remove all dust, grease, oil, etc. If it has a protective coating, remove
that as well, and check that the towball is not damaged at all.
5) If the bike carrier moves when installed on the towball check that
you have carried out the lock adjustment procedure correctly as
described in the assembly instructions and if necessary tighten it
further with the supplied wrench.
6) Before setting o always check that the lights, if present, are
working perfectly by activating the indicator lights, the reverse
lights, and the stop lights. If fog lights are installed on the bike
carrier, check that they turn on and o in correspondence with the
switching on and o of the fog lights on the vehicle.
7) If the vehicle is tted with a third stop light (rst type vehicles
approved after 01/10/1998) it must be visible: 10 degrees to the left
and to the right of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle; 10 degrees
above and 5 degrees below the horizontal axis. If it is not possible to
comply with these instructions then an optional stop light must be
tted.
8) If the product has a tilt mechanism to enable access to the boot,
always check that the mechanism is locked in the transport position
before moving the vehicle. To facilitate tilting, lift the bike carrier
slightly towards the car to enable activation of the tilt system.
9) If the bike carrier has a lock, make sure that, while the vehicle is
in motion, it is always in the locked position and that the keys are
stored inside the vehicle for the entire trip.
10)Take care that the bike carrier or the bikes are positioned away from
the exhaust pipe as the heat could damage the parts; if necessary
install an exhaust pipe extension.
11)Check that the electric cables, if present, are not damaged. When
closing, opening, tilting the bike carrier always take care not to
entangle/crush the cables.
12)The lighting devices are not designed to be immersed in water.
13)Any work on the electrical devices must be carried out by qualied
personnel.
14)Provide a suitable copy of the number plate to attach to the towbar
bike carrier. For bike carriers without integrated lights, the number
plate could be partially obscured by the load; in this case the
number plate should be repositioned so that it is visible or a copy
attached to the bike carrier in compliance with applicable laws.
15)Depending on the model of bike carrier the rear lights might not
be integrated:the rear lights and number plate must be perfectly
visible. If they are obscured, use an approved lighting board to
display the lights and number plate, which must comply with
national regulations in terms of size and lighting. The electrical
connections of the lighting board must comply with the car
manufacturer’s recommendations and consequently be carried out
by qualied personnel. On some bike carrier models an additional
number plate could be required and attached to the indicated part
of the bike carrier in compliance with local regulations.
16)The speed of the vehicle must be appropriate for the load, and in
any case never exceed 130 km/h; always observe the set speed
limits.
17)Drive over speed humps or particularly bumpy roads at a maximum
speed of 10 km/h.
DRIVING A VEHICLE WITH A BIKE CARRIER TOWBAR
1) Initially after a brief drive then at regular intervals, check all the
fastening elements of the bike carrier. If you notice a strange noise,
movement of the load or any other unusual occurrence stop the
vehicle immediately and make a thorough inspection of the bike
carrier and the load.
2) The driver of the vehicle is solely responsible for ensuring that the
bike carrier is secured correctly to the towbar and that the load is
secure even if the operations were carried out by a third party.
3) Keep in mind that when using the towbar bike carrier, the rear
projections are dierent to normal. The bikes can actually increase
the projections both in height and width, therefore take care when
reversing or parking because of the increased length and height of
the vehicle.
4) Also more attention is required when driving with bikes loaded on
a carrier because the weight of the bicycles changes the driving
characteristics of the car, especially in windy conditions, when
driving around curves or when braking. When on the road observe
the speed limits set by the road rules and pay attention to the road
conditions to avoid jolts or sudden movements.
5) If the driver’s rear view is obstructed, the vehicle must be equipped
with rearview mirrors to ensure safe driving.
6) In the interest of energy saving and for the safety of pedestrians and
other drivers, we recommend removing the bike carrier when not in use.
7) For bike carriers with retractable lights, we recommend never
driving with the lights in the closed position.
MAINTENANCE
1) Regularly wash the bike carrier with warm water or car shampoo,
especially after you have used it in coastal areas (salt water eect)
or if you have driven on roads with salt on them (in winter).
