How do I deregister a handset? I have a Panasonic KX-TG1000 : 108

How do I deregister a handset? I have a Panasonic KX-TG1000N base with KX-TG100N handsets. I recently acquired another handset and after charging the battery and entering the base code, it just displays "SEARCHING FOR BASE". I think these only can have 4 handsets registered. Do I need to deregister one of my current handsets to register another one? I only have 1 working handset; although I have registered 4 in the past. Over time, I have had handsets quit working and replaced them. I recently was using only 2 (numbered 1 and 4), but #4 quit working, so I just acquired a new one to replace it.
