Glossary
Bitstream
The digita l f orm of multi- channel data (e.g . 5.1 channe l) bef ore de coding.
Decoder
A decoder r estores coded a udio signal s on D VDs to normal.
Dolby Digital
This is a method of codi ng digita l signals de veloped b y Dolb y
Labora tories. Apart from stereo (2- channel) audio , these signals can also
be mul ti-channel au dio . A lar ge amoun t of audio i nf ormation can be
recorded on one disc using this method.
Dolby Pr o Logic
A surround system where a 4-channe l audio track is recorded as
2 channe ls and then is restored to 4 channe ls f or pla y . The surrou nd
channel is monaura l and can reprodu ce up to 7 kHz.
DTS (Digita l Theater Systems)
This surr ound system is used in many movie the aters aro und the wo rld.
There is good sep aration be tween the chan nels, so real istic sound eff ects
are poss ible.
Dyna mic r ange
Dynamic r ange is th e diff erence be tween the low est le vel of sound that
can be hear d abov e the noise of the equipme nt and the highest le v el of
sound bef ore distortion occurs.
Film and video
D VD-Vi deos are record ed using eithe r film or video. Usually , film is
recorded at 24 fram es per second , the r ate movi es are filmed at, while
video is recor ded at 30 fr ames per se cond.
Frame still and field s till
F rames are the still pictures that make moving pictures. About thir ty are
shown each second. A frame still may appear blurred but ov erall quality is
high.
T w o fields appear alternately to m ake up one fram e. A fiel d still i s not
blur red b ut picture qu ality is lo wer .
Interlace and progressive output
NTSC , the vid eo signal sta ndard, ha s 480 interlaced ( I) scan lines ,
whereas prog ressiv e scanning uses twice th e number of sca n lines . This
is called 480P .
I/P/ B
MPEG 2, the vi deo compression standard adopted f or use with D VD-
Video , codes frames using thes e 3 picture ty pes.
I: Intra coded pic ture
This picture has the best quality and is the best to use when adjusting
the picture .
P: Predi ctive coded pictur e
This picture i s calculated b ased on past I or P-pictures .
B: Bidirection ally-p redictiv e coded picture
This picture i s calculated b y comparing past and future I and
P-pict ures so it ha s the lowest volume of informa tion.
Linear PCM (pulse code modulation)
These ar e uncom pressed digital si gnals, sim ilar to thos e found on CDs.
Signal sy stem: P AL 625/50, P AL525/60, NTSC
Operating temperature ra nge: i5 to i35 oC
Operating humidity range: 5 to 90 % RH (no condensation )
