can lead, for example,toashort circuit and
thus damagethe vehicle electronics.This can
lead to function restrictionsapplyingto
safety-relevantsystems,e.g thelighting sys-
tem, theABS (anti-lockbraking system) or the
ESP

(Electronic StabilityProgram). The oper-
atingsafety of your vehicle may be restricted.
You could lose control of thevehicle,for
example:

when braking
R
in theevent of abrupt steering maneuvers
and/or when thevehicle's speedisnot
adapted to theroad conditions
Thereisariskofanaccident.
In theevent of ashort circuit or asimilar inci-
dent, contact aqualified specialist workshop
immediately. Do notdriveany further. You
should have all work involving thebattery car-
ried out at aqualified specialist workshop.

WARNING
Electrostatic build-up can lead to thecreation
of sparks,whichcould ignite thehighly explo-
sivegases of abattery. Thereisariskofan
explosion.
Before handlingthe battery, touch thevehicle
body to remove any existing electrostatic
build-up.
The highly flammable gas mixtureforms when
chargingthe battery as well as when jump-start-
ing.
Always makesure that neither you northe bat-
tery is electrostatically charged. Abuild-up of
electrostatic charge can be caused, for exam-
ple:

by wearingclothing made from synthetic
fibers
R
due to friction between clothing and seats
R
if you push or pull thebattery across thecar-
pet or other synthetic materials
R
if you rub thebattery withacloth

WARNING
During thechargingprocess, abattery produ-
ces hydrogen gas. If ashort circuit occursor
sparks are created, thehydrogen gas can
ignite.Thereisariskofanexplosion.

Makesure that thepositiveterminal of a
connected battery does notcomeintocon-
tactwithvehicle parts.

Never placemetal objectsortools on abat-
tery.
R
It is important that you observethe descri-
bed order of thebattery terminalswhen
connecting and disconnecting abattery.

When jump-starting, makesure that the
battery poles withidentical polarity are
connected.

It is particularly important to observethe
describedorder when connecting and dis-
connecting thejumper cables.

Never connect or disconnect thebattery
terminalswhile theengineisrunning.

Battery acid is caustic.Thereisariskofinjury.
Avoid contact withskin, eyes or clothing.Do
notinhale any battery gases.Donot lean over
thebattery. Keep children away from batter-
ies. Wash away battery acid immediately with
plenty of clean waterand seek medical atten-
tion.
