JMD:1 Time Line and Amp History
AspreviouslystatedtheJMD:1Seriesincorporatesthe
tonesandcharacteristicsof a varietyofMarshall
amplifiersand FX pedals.Thissection providesa brief
historyof alltheseproducts.
1. 1959
Initiallymanufactured fromthemid to late 60s,this
legendaryamplifierembodiestheveryessence ofthe
vintageMarshallsound.
Nicknamed'The Plexi' due tothegoldplexiglasfront
panel,the1959 was bornwhenTheWho’sguitarist,Pete
Townshend,approached Marshallinthemid ’60sand
askedJimto buildhima ‘weapon’thatwouldallowhimto
play so loud thathe wouldn’tbeableto hearwhatthe
membersof theaudienceweresaying, should theyhave
thesheeraudacity to talk whilst hewasperforming!Jim
andhisteam obliged,andwithinweeks of Pete’srequest
oneofrock’smost instantly recognisable iconswasborn-
the100WattMarshallstack.
Althoughproductionofthe1959continuedlongafterthe
1960s,theendofthe Plexi-era beganin’69whengold
anodisedaluminiumwasintroducedforthefrontpanels.
Theoriginal'Plexis' havethereforebecomeextremely
rare and highly prized pieces of rock history.
2. 1974
DespiteMarshallsiconicstatusasthecreatorofthestack,
Marshallhasalsoproduceda numberofundeniableicons
intheamplifiercomboworld.Initiallycreatedbackin1966,
the1974isacompactall-valvecombo.The1974was
designedtobeanaffordablevalveamplifierforthe
massesandsoongaineda healthyreputation.Setinatop
loadedcabinet,thiscompact18Wattcombohouseda
single12 speaker,whichmeantnotonlywasit
immenselyportablebutitalsohadthepowerandpunch.
UtilisingEL84valves,theoverallfeelandtoneofthe1974
isinherentlydifferenttoanEL34amp.
Separatedinto two separatechannels,each withtwo
inputsforlowandhighsensitivity, the1974originally
came in twooptions,ReverborTremolo.The standard
channelfor the amplifier had justsingletoneandvolume
controlswhilsttheother channelhadadditionalcontrolsto
adjusttheeffect applied.The 2004re-issue ofthe1974
featuredonlythemore popularTremolooptionand, as
with the originalunit,theseadditionalcontrols forthis
channeladjust boththespeedandintensityoftheeffect
totheguitariststaste.The re-issue, likeallof Marshalls
re-issuedvintageamplifiers,wasa painstakingrecreation
oftheoriginal unitandevenfeaturesthe samevalve
tremolocircuitry.
Featuredtwice in theJMD:1,the1974providespartof
thenewsoundcreatedfortheCrunchVintage mode
whereit couplesthetonalqualitiesofthe1974withthe
EQof amonster1959.The1974isalsousedforthe
CrunchFull pre-ampmode, wherethe1974s sustainand
clarityof individualnotesisused, demonstratingwhythe
1974 is stillpopularwith guitariststo thisdayin itsnew
1974Xre-issue format.
3. JCM800 2203
The2203 is quitesimplyonethe mostimportant
amplifiersMarshallhasever created.Evolvingfromthe
previouslymentioned100 WattPlexihead,it was the first
tohouse a MasterVolume(MV)control.This ground-
breakingfeatureallowed the pre-ampto distortfully
withouthaving to turn the amp uptoten,providingthick
overdriventoneat a fraction ofthevolume.Firstavailable
inthemid’70s,itwasn'tuntil 1981thattheversionofthe
2203 we know todaywasunleashedaspartof the mighty
JCM800series.Thisstraightforward,yethighly versatile,
singlechannel monster,immediatelyfoundfavourwith
therapidly growingheavy metalscenethatdominated
much of the’80s.Thewiderangingtonalpalette of the
2203 saw it provejustas popularin the BritPopand
Grungeladen’90sandremainsthebenchmarkbywhich
allmodernrock ampsarejudged.The2203hasprovided
themusclebehindcountlessrock and metallegends and
hasappearedtwice asa modifiedsignaturemodel.The
2203 providestheJMD:1withtwopre-ampoptions.
CrunchClassic deliversa raw edgytone,onethat
optimisestheMarshallcrunchsound.TheOverdrive
Deep pre-amppairs the 2203withMarshallBluesbreaker
pedaltopology,creatinghot-roddedtonesthewaythey
shouldbe.
4. The Guv'nor Distortion Pedal
Launchedin the 1980’s,theoriginalGuv’nor(socalledas
this is JimMarshall’snickname)becamea classic
footpedalknownforhighquality distortiontones.Much
lovedby pros,semi-prosandamateursalike,the Guv’nor
earneditselfa specialplace intheheartsof distortion
smittenguitariststheworld over.
5. JMP-1
Releasedin 1992,theJMP-1was Marshall'sfirst venture
into MIDIcontrolledguitarpre-ampsandtheworlds first
superhybridpre-amp. Its nocoincidencethatthe
principlesheldby the JMP-1have beencarriedforwardto
theJMD:1,just asthenamesuggests.This was a
revolutionaryrackunit, utilising the bestof bothanalogue
anddigital MIDItechnology. The JMP-1'ssuccesslayin
itsincredible tone,with the digitalcontrolcapabilities
addinga new degree of flexibilityandversatility.Guitarists
couldnowstore and recall theirfavouritepre-amp tones
usingtheJMP-1'sbuilt-in100patches. Greatlyrespected
andhighlyprizedbythosewhoownthem,theJMP-1
remainsone of themostreveredrackpre-amps ever.
6. JCM2000 DSL100
InitsdaytheDualSuper Leadcontainedthelargest
amountofgaina Marshallamphadeveroffered.The
DSL's2 channel dualmodedesignmeant thatguitarists
couldchose either a clean orcrunchtonefrom the
ClassicGainchannel, whilst alsopickingbetweenthe
2 leadsoundsprovided bytheUltra GainChannel.This
tonalversatilitywas aidedfurther bythechannel
spanningDeepandToneShiftfeatures,providingadded
punchanddepth orextracutand biterespectively. This
enabledthe DSLtodelivera hugerangeofall-valvetone,
from 'NashvilleClean'to modern 'scooped' metal. Withall
this purevalve versatility, itseasy toseewhytheDSLis
stillheldinhighregardby manyof theworld'stop players.
7. Bluesbreaker II FX Pedal
TheBluesbreakerIItakes the philosophyof the original
MarshallBluesbreakerpedalone stepfurther,featuring
notonebuttwomodes,Blues and Boost.Thiseffectively
makesit two pedals inone.TheBluesbreakerII'sBoost
mode was designedwith the vintagevalve ampor‘tone
puristtypeof guitarplayerinmind. Idealifyouwantto
drivethefront-endharder,pushingtheamp furtherinto
naturaloverdriveand withoutaltering the originaltone.
8. Mode Four (MF350)
Featuringa true'two-amps-in-one' design,theModeFour
wascreated to offerthebest ofbothclassicand modern
Marshalltone.Amp1 andAmp2 housed separate
ECC83drivenpre-ampcircuitry, with the shared 350 Watt
powerstage reconfiguringwhenswitchingbetween
amplifiers.BothAmp1 andAmp2 featuredtwomodes
each,addingup tofour(hencethename)in total Clean,
Crunch,OD1 and OD2.Theenormousheadroomofthe
Mode Fourgaveitsuperiorbottom-endcloutandalso
retainedthetonal definitionat highstagevolumes,
makingitideal for metalandthrashstyles.
9. JVM Series
Launchedin November2006,theflagshipJVMSeries
causedtheguitarworldto situpandtakenote.Featuring
4 all-valve channelswith 3modeseach,theJVM4
rangeoffersguitaristsa possible 12 uniquetones,
sophisticatedchannelswitchingtechnologyandMIDI
capabilities,confirmingMarshall's placeatthe forefront of
valve-drivenguitaramplification.The 2channeland
aptly-namedJVM2rangefollowed in January 2008,
deliveringa morestreamlinedandfocusedversion ofthe
multi-awardwinningJVMSeries.
SoreveredhastheJVMbecome,that its multi-mode
topologyhascreatedthreeof theJMD:1's16 pre-amp
options.TheJMD:1'sCleanModernpre-amp setting
demonstrates thesparklingtonalclarityoftheJVM's
Cleanchannelinitsinitialgainstage,whereas Overdrive
Moderncranksthingsupwitha powerfulcontemporary
crunch,derivedfromtheJVM4'sred'moded'Crunch
channel.Finally, theLead Modern pre-amputilises the
JVM4'sOD1channel design tounleash anaggressive,
full-bodiedleadtone.
10. Haze40
Themost recent amplifier to beincluded inthesepre-amp
selections,theHazerange,waslaunchedin March2009
andfeaturesbotha 15Wattmini-stack and 40Watt1x12''
combo.Containing2 channels,all-valvesignalpathand
studioquality effects,the Haze40 was designedwith the
blues/jazzplayerfirmly in mind.Theamprespondsjust
howyouwouldexpect,withpickingdynamicsandguitar
controlsplayinga big rolein achievingyourtone.The
amps design allows the effectscircuitrytobe totally
bypassed,preservingthattreasuredall-valvesignalpath.
