lich geworden.
Information about the Prototype
Shortly after the establishment of the German Federal Rail-
road in 1949, the still new railroad management decided to
take possession of the three class 05 locomotives, because
every operational locomotive was needed after the war. The
first to be overhauled at Krauss-Maffei was road number
05 003, which had already lost its streamlining as early as
1944.
In addition, this locomotive was the only one in Germany
equipped in 1937 with the engineer‘s cab at the front. The
locomotive was run cab forward relative to the tender,
which meant that the coal from the tender had to travel
14 meters / approximately 46 feet to reach the firebox. Coal
dust therefore had to be used for firing the locomotive. This
design was not successful, and in 1944 the locomotive was
rebuilt as mentioned above and the locomotive was placed
with the engineer‘s cab in the back.
The DB used road number 05 003 on the point of important,
long-distance express trains (“F-Zug”). The class 05 was
known to be used for trains with the names “Hanseat”
(F1 and F2) and “Dompfeil” (F13, F14, and F16).
All three of the class 05 locomotives were retired as early
as 1958 – the new class V 200 and E 10 locomotives were
superior to the class 05, and maintenance work for the class
05 had become too expensive.
