OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Side grip (auxiliary handle) (Fig. 1)
For your own safety, always use the side grip. The
side grip can be installed on either side of the tool.
Switching ON and OFF (Fig. 2)
CAUTION:
Before plugging in the tool, always check to see that
the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the
‘‘OFF’ position when released.
To switch on, press the trigger. To switch off, release
the trigger.
Continuous running (Fig. 2)
Press the trigger and at the same time push the lock
button. To stop this lock position, press the trigger and
release it.
Speed change
For 9207SPB (Fig. 3)
The tool speed can be changed by moving the speed
change switch to the ‘‘L’’ position or ‘‘H’’ position.
High speed (3,800 min
-1
): For sanding operation
Low speed (2,000 min
-1
): For polishing operation
CAUTION:
Use the speed change switch only after the tool
comes to a complete stop.
For 9217SPC (Fig. 4)
The tool speed can be infinitely adjusted between
1,500 rpm and 2,800 rpm by turning the speed
change knob. Refer to the table below for relationship
between the number settings on the knob and the
approx. tool speed.
High speed: For sanding operation
Low speed: For polishing operation

CAUTION:
If the tool is operated continuously at low speeds for
a long time, the motor will get overloaded and
heated up.
The speed adjusting dial can be turned only as far
as 6 and back to 1. Do not force it past 6 or 1, or the
speed adjusting function may no longer work.
FOR USE AS A SANDER
Installing or removing the abrasive disc
(Fig.5&6)
Important:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and
unplugged before installing or removing the disc.
Mount the rubber pad onto the spindle. Fit the disc on
over the rubber pad and screw the lock nut onto the
spindle. Hold the spindle firmly with the wrench and
tighten the lock nut using the lock nut wrench.
Sanding operation (Fig. 7)
Keep the abrasive disc at an angle of about 10° 15°
to the workpiece surface. Apply slight pressure only.
Excessive pressure will result in poor performance
and premature wear to the abrasive disc.
FOR USE AS A POLISHER
Installing or removing the wool bonnet
(Fig. 8,9&10)
Important:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and
unplugged before installing or removing the wool
bonnet.
Mount the rubber pad onto the spindle. Screw the lock
nut onto the spindle. Hold the spindle firmly with the
wrench and tighten the lock nut using the lock nut
wrench. Fit the wool bonnet over the rubber pad. Tie
a bow knot and tuck the knot and any loose strings
between the wool bonnet and the rubber pad.
Polishing operation (Fig. 11)
Keep the wool bonnet at an angle of about 10° 15°
to the workpiece surface.
MAINTENANCE
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and
unplugged before carrying out any work on the tool.
Replacement of carbon brushes
(Fig. 12 & 13)
Replace carbon brushes when they are worn down to
the limit mark. Both identical carbon brushes should
be replaced at the same time.
To maintain product safety and reliability, repairs,
maintenance or adjustment should be carried out by a
Makita Authorized Service Center.
