POSITIONING THE SPEAKERS
The middle of the image and the central listening position are the reference points for setting up all the
speakers (Fig. 3).
The tweeters of all the front speakers should be placed at the ear level of the listening position (approx. 90 -
100 cm). If the speaker is positioned higher or lower, it should be set at an angle, where possible, so that the
tweeter is aimed at ear height. There should be a clear line of sight between the speakers and the listening
position. Sound-absorbing or reflecting obstacles distort the sound.
The centre speaker should be positioned directly below or above the TV or screen. The left and rights speakers
should span an angle of around 45° seen from the listening position, i.e. approx. 22.5° on each side. If this is
not possible, the speakers should be positioned close to these locations.
The RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speakers are hung at least 60 cm above ear level (centre of the
speaker) immediately to the left and right of the listening position (Fig. 3). For a correct soundscape, make
sure the left and right surround sound speakers are not reversed (marked on the type label).
AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION
A lot of modern AV amplifiers and receivers provide the option of automatic system calibration via micro-
phone. Calibration is advisable as the levels and distances of all the loudspeakers are determined automati-
cally and, depending on the calibration system, the frequency responses of the connected speakers are also
corrected in order to compensate for poor room acoustics. Please read the user guide for your AV amplifier or
receiver in this regard.
EXPANDING THE SYSTEM
To expand the system for larger rooms and optimum sound distribution, it is advisable to use a second sub-
woofer and two additional speakers as surround back (“SB”) behind the listening position. There are several
possible configurations for the surround back speakers.
THX recommends two direct sound transducers (e.g. LCR 100-THX) positioned only a few cm apart at ear
level behind the listening position (“THX Advanced Speaker Array, Fig. 4a). Together with the THX-certified
electronics, they produce harmonious sound fields for all applications (film, music, games).
When connecting to non-THX-certified electronics, two direct sound transducers (e.g. LCR 100-THX) or two
further dipoles (e.g. RD 200-THX) are recommended as surround back speakers. In both cases, these should be
secured on the back wall behind the listening positions at least 120 cm apart. Direct sound transducers should
be positioned at the height of the front speakers, and the dipoles at the height of the existing side dipoles.
The choice of the optimum speakers depends on the application. In the case of a short distance between the
listening position and the rear wall (less than 120cm), dipole speakers are ideal, with direct sound transducers
preferred for greater distances (at least 120cm). In addition, direct sound transducers are ideal for multi-
channel music reproduction. Dipoles are recommended for a markedly diffuse soundscape in the rear area
and the reproduction of movie sound.
If the source material and electronics offer options of further channels (e.g. presence speaker, Dolby Atmos
etc.), the system can be expanded additionally with the compact AEH 400-ATM universal add-on speaker. The
AEH 400-ATM offers two switch-selectable modes: an Atmos mode in the form of a Dolby Atmos-compatible
add-on speaker (fits on top of the LCR 100-THX front speaker) and a direct sound transducer mode for use as
an add-on speaker for wall and ceiling mounting.
