Thischaptercontainsthesafetyinformationthatyoumustbefamiliarwith.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproduct
manufacturer.Donotusetheacpowercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallbesafetyapproved.ForGermany,itshallbeH05VV-F,
3G,0.75mm

,orbetter.Forothercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeused
accordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocan
stressthecordinwaysthatcancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.This
canpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,or
pinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleave
yourpowercordorpoweradapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatare
cleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancauseashortcircuit,particularlyifthe
powercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminals
onapoweradapter,whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedinto
receptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshows
signsofoverheating(suchasdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereon
thepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshow
signsofcorrosionoroverheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeen
damagedinanyway.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandafter
maintenance.
Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.

2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempt
tolift.
4.Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisaction
removesthestrainfromthemusclesinyourback.
Attention:
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)or
objectsthatyouthinkaretooheavyforyou.
Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakes
theequipmentunsafe.
Beforeyoustartthemachine,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthe
customer'spersonnelarenotinahazardousposition.
Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,
whileyouareservicingthemachine.
Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottrip
overit.
Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofa
machine.Ensurethatyoursleevesarefastenedorrolledupaboveyour
elbows.Ifyourhairislong,fastenit.
Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwitha
nonconductiveclip,approximately8centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyeglasses,ormetalfastenersfor
yourclothing.
Remember:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouare:hammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,
attachingsprings,usingsolvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmight
behazardoustoyoureyes.
Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.
Replaceanysafetydevicethatiswornordefective.
Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer.

Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveral
minutesuntilthecomputeriscool.
Electricalsafety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentfrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbe
hazardous.Toavoidpersonalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnectthe
attachedpowercords,telecommunicationsystems,networks,andmodems
beforeyouopenthecomputercovers,unlessinstructedotherwiseinthe
installationandconfigurationprocedures.
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshave
handlescoveredwithasoftmaterialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwith
liveelectricalcurrents.
Manycustomershave,neartheirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmall
conductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.Donotusethistypeof
mattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,or
electricaloutlet.Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatethe
switchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathas
hazardousvoltages.
Disconnectallpowerbefore:

RemovingorinstallingFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannot
unplugit,poweroffthewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachineandlock
thewallboxintheoffposition.
Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observe
thefollowingprecautions:

Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,if
necessary.
Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;
keeptheotherhandinyourpocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Theremustbeacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.
Byobservingtheaboverule,youmaypreventacurrentfrompassing
throughyourbody.
Whenusingatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobe
leadsandaccessoriesforthattester.
Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulate
youfromgroundssuchasmetalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;
theseinstructionsareinthesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Use
extremecarewhenmeasuringhighvoltages.
Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperational
condition.
Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,check
thatithasbeenpowered-off.
Alwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesof
thesehazardsaremoistfloors,nongroundedpowerextensioncables,power
surges,andmissingsafetygrounds.
Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplastic
dentalmirror.Thesurfaceisconductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonal
injuryandmachinedamage.
Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremoved
fromtheirnormaloperatingplacesinamachine:

Pumps
Blowersandfans
Motorgenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.)
Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourself.
Switchoffpower.

Glasspartsnotice
CAUTION:
Somepartsofyourproductmaybemadeofglass.Thisglasscouldbreakif
theproductisdroppedonahardsurfaceorreceivesasubstantialimpact.If
glassbreaks,donottouchorattempttoremoveit.Stopusingyourproduct
untiltheglassisreplacedbytrainedservicepersonnel.
Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafe
conditionsontheseproducts.Eachmachine,asitwasdesignedandbuilt,had
requiredsafetyitemsinstalledtoprotectusersandservicepersonnelfrominjury.
Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.However,goodjudgmentshouldbeused
toidentifypotentialsafetyhazardsduetoattachmentoffeaturesoroptionsnot
coveredbythisinspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowseriousthe
apparenthazardcouldbeandwhetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrecting
theproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecan
causeseriousorfatalelectricalshock).
Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorbulgingcapacitor
Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Theguideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedinachecklist.Beginthechecks
withthepoweroff,andthepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasure
third-wiregroundcontinuityfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternal
groundpinandframeground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedintheparts
listings.
c.Insulationmustnotbefrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyobviousalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetyof
anyalterations.

6.Checkinsidetheunitforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilings,
contamination,waterorotherliquids,orsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeen
removedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Anycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbe
consideredsensitivetoelectrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccur
whenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.ToprotectagainstESD
damage,equalizethechargebetweenobjects.Then,themachine,thepart,the
workmat,andthepersonhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirements
notedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO
9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.
Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeand
retainsachargeevenwhenyouarewearingawriststrap.
Usetheblacksideofagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freework
surface.ThematisespeciallyusefulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
Selectagroundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotection
thatmeetsthespecificservicerequirement.
Note:Theuseofagroundingsystemisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotect
againstESDdamage.
AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyframeground,groundbraid,or
green-wireground.
UseanESDcommongroundorreferencepointwhenworkingona
double-insulatedorbattery-operatedsystem.Youcanusecoaxor
connector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.

Arrangingyourworkspace
Togetthemostfromyourcomputer,arrangeboththeequipmentyouuseand
yourworkareatosuityourneedsandthekindofworkyoudo.Yourcomfort

electricaloutletscanalsoaffectthewayyouarrangeyourworkspace.

Althoughnosingleworkingpositionisidealforeveryone,hereareafewguidelines

Sittinginthesamepositionforalongtimecancausefatigue.Thebackrestand
seatofyourchairshouldadjustindependentlyandprovidegoodsupport.The
seatshouldhaveacurvedfronttorelievepressureonthethighs.Adjusttheseat
sothatyourthighsareparalleltothefloorandyourfeetareeitherflatonthe
floororonafootrest.
Whenusingthekeyboard,keepyourforearmsparalleltothefloorandyourwrists

Glareandlighting
Positionthemonitortominimizeglareandreflectionsfromoverheadlights,
windows,andotherlightsources.Reflectedlightfromshinysurfacescancause
annoyingreflectionsonyourmonitorscreen.Placethemonitoratrightangles
towindowsandotherlightsources,whenpossible.Reduceoverheadlighting,
ifnecessary,byturningofflightsorusinglowerwattagebulbs.Ifyouinstallthe
