Bei sehr großen Kontrasten zwischen hellen und

dunklen Partien reicht der Belichtungsumfang

der Filme nicht mehr aus, sowohl im "Licht" als

auch im "Schatten" alle Helligkeitsdifferenzierun-

gen des Motivs zu registrieren. Es bleibt der Ent-

scheidung des Fotografen überlassen, in welchen

Partien er noch Zeichnung wünscht. Eine Person

kann dann z.B. als schwarze Silhouette (unterbe-

lichtet) vor richtig belichteter Landschaft, oder

richtig belichtet vor "ausgeblichenem" Hinter-

grund (überbelichtet) stehen. Das Anmessen von

"Licht" und "Schatten" und eine daraus ermittelte

Kompromiss-Belichtung führt in der Regel zu un-

befriedigenden Ergebnissen, weil dann sowohl in

den hellen als auch in den dunklen Partien Diffe-

renzierungen verloren gehen.

Bewusst knapper bzw. bewusst reichlicher ge-

wählte Belichtungen verstärken oft den Charak-

ter eines Bildes und können deshalb als Gestal-

tungsmittel sinnvoll eingesetzt werden.
