Bij zeer grote contrasten tussen lichte en donkere

partijen is het belichtingsbereik van de film onvol-

doende om zowel in het "licht" als in de "schaduw"

alle helderheidsverschillen te registreren. Het is

aan de fotograaf in welke partijen hij nog tekening

wenst. Iemand kan dan bijv. als zwarte silhouette

(onderbelicht) voor een juist belicht landschap, of

juist belicht voor een "bleke" achtergrond (over-

belicht) staan.

Het meten van "licht" en "schaduw" en een daaruit

voortvloeiend compromis voor de belichting leidt

gewoonlijk tot onbevredigende resultaten omdat

zowel in de lichte als donkere partijen onder-

scheid verloren gaat.

Bewust krapper of ruimer gekozen belichtingen

versterken vaak het karakter van een foto en kun-

nen daarom als beeldvormend middel zinvol wor-

den toegepast.
