air can cause skin to crack and become irritated more easily. Typically however, a lower dewpoint is considered
more comfortable because of the correlation with lower temperatures.
People more used to continental climates often begin to feel uncomfortable when the
dew point reaches between 59 to 68 °F (15 and 20 °C). Most people living in these areas
will consider dew points above 70 °F (21 °C) oppressive.
In summary, it is a matter of preference whether to monitor the Outdoor Humidity or
the Dewpoint value to maintain comfort levels.
MIN AND MAX DEWPOINT
The minimum and maximum dew points are recorded and displayed in the Dewpoint section of the Heavy
Weather Pro application. To view or reset the min and max dewpoint values, see the section on Min Max Values.
WINDCHILL
WHAT IS WIND CHILL?
Wind Chill is the perceived temperature felt on exposed skin due to wind. How much is effects us depends on both
air temperature and wind speed. The wind chill temperature (often called just the wind chill factor) is always lower
than the air temperature for values where the wind chill formula is valid.
Note: Wind Chill measurement methods vary over time, as established by the National Weather Service and other
weather reporting authorities. This weather station uses the classical wind chill values.
HOW DOES WIND CHILL AFFECT ME?
The human body loses heat largely by evaporative cooling and convection. The rate of heat loss by a surface
depends on the wind speed above that surface: the faster the wind speed, the better the surface cools.
For inanimate objects, the effect of wind chill is to reduce any warmer objects to the
ambient temperature more quickly.
For people, the body’s response is to try to maintain surface (skin) temperature in an
acceptable range so as to avoid adverse effects. This attempt to maintain a warm skin
surface temperature in an environment of faster heat loss makes it feel colder, and
can actually cause the skins temperature to decrease, increasing the risk of frostbite.
Note: Monitoring Wind Chill is an important safety factor in colder seasons.
