The truss bridge is a type of beam bridge. It was developed to meet a need caused by the growth of the railroads.
Bridge builders needed very tall beams that could carry 100-ton trains that shifted weight as they moved. To achieve this,
they added a pattern of triangles called a truss to the bridge’s beam. This support made the beam stiffer. It also spread
out the weight of the load along the bridge. You can identify a truss type by the design, location and materials used to
make the truss. One of the most popular early designs was the Howe truss, a design patented by William Howe in 1840.
