A Beam Bridge is the simplest type of bridge and may have been
the first type of bridge ever used, like when a log falls across a
stream. Modern beam bridges are made from steel beams and
can be quite complex, but all beam bridges are alike in the way
that they support their own weight and the load they bear on
upright or vertical supports.
Here are descriptions of the dierent parts that make up a beam
bridge. Can you identify them on your model?
Piers – the vertical supports of a bridge
Beam – the horizontal framework that rests on the piers
Span – the distance between the piers
Deck – the surface of the bridge that serves as a walkway,
roadway, or railway
