the operation, a suitable interim solution must be used. This must be reported to
the owner of the equipment, so all parties are advised. Initial safety checks must
include: that the capacitors are discharged: this must be done safely to avoid the
possibility of sparks; that there are no live electrical components and exposed cables
while charging, recovering or purging the system; that there is continuity in the
earth connection.
2. REPAIRS TO SEALED COMPONENTS
1) During repairs to sealed components, all electrical connections must be disconnected
from the equipment being worked on before removing any sealed items. If it is
absolutely necessary to have an electrical power supply to the equipment during
maintenance, then it is necessary to have a leak detector constantly in operation,
thus locating which are the potentially most dangerous points.
2) When working on electrical components, pay special attention to the following to
ensure that the coating is not altered in a way that affects the level of protection.
This includes damage to cables, excessive number of connections, terminals not
conforming to original specifications, damage to gaskets, incorrect assembly of
glands, etc. Make sure the unit is mounted securely. Make sure that the gaskets and
sealing materials have not deteriorated to the point that they are no longer suitable
in order to prevent development within flammable atmospheres. Replacement parts
must conform to the manufacturer’s specifications.
NOTE: The use of silicone sealant can inhibit the effectiveness of some types of
equipment for the leak detection. Intrinsically safe components do not need to be
isolated before working on them.
3. REPAIR OF INHERENTLY UNSAFE COMPONENTS
Do not apply permanent inductive or capacitive loads to the circuit without ensuring
that it does not exceed the voltage and current allowed for the equipment in use.
The components
Intrinsically safe are the only types that can be used in the presence of a flammable
