Observe que los resultados intermedios no se visualizan únicamente cuando se calculan, sino
que se almacenan automáticamente en la pila y están disponibles justo en el momento
preciso.
En eso consiste básicamente el funcionamiento de la pila. En el resto del apéndice se
explicará con mayor detalle el modo de introducir y organizar los números en la pila, y el
efecto de las diversas funciones de la calculadora hp 12c sobre los números de la pila.
Introducir números en la pila: La tecla
Tal y como se ha explicado en secciones anteriores, si se teclean dos números en una función
de dos números como, por ejemplo,

, hay que pulsar

entre ambos números para
separarlos. El siguiente diagrama ilustra lo que ocurre en la pila cuando se introducen los
números 10 y 3 (para calcular, por ejemplo, 10 ÷ 3). (Supongamos que los números que
aparecen como resultado de cálculos anteriores ya se han cargado en los registros de pila).
Cuando se teclea un dígito en la pantalla, se introduce simultáneamente en el registro X.
Como se pulsan otras teclas de dígitos, los dígitos correspondientes se añaden a la derecha
de los que ya aparecen en el registro X hasta que se pulsa
