Snow White
Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess called “Snow White”.
When her mother died, her father married a proud and wicked woman
who could not bear for anybody to be more beautiful than her.
The new queen has a magic mirror. Every morning she asked “Mirror,
mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” To this the mirror answered
“You are the fairest of all.”
When Snow White was seven years old, the queen again asked her mirror.
The mirror answered “You, are the fairest here; but Snow White is a thousand
times fairer than you”. The queen turned green with envy and ordered that
the girl be taken into the dark forest.
Snow White was very frightened in the forest, until in the evening she saw
a little house. Inside the house were seven little chairs, and seven little plates
on the table. Snow White was so hungry that she ate from a little plate and
then lay down in the biggest of the seven beds.
Later that night the masters of the house returned home. They were the seven
dwarfs who dug for ore in the mountains. The fi rst dwarf asked “Who has been
sitting in my chair?” And the second “Who has been eating from my plate?”
The seventh dwarf found Snow White sleeping in his bed. When the girl
woke up and saw the seven dwarfs she was frightened but the dwarfs were
friendly so Snow White stayed with them.
“Snow White is dead”, the mean queen thought. But when she asked her
mirror again, the answer was “You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow White,
beyond the mountains with the seven dwarfs, is a thousand times fairer than you!”
The queen got very angry. She went over the seven mountains to the little
house of the dwarfs. Disguised as an old woman, she gave Snow White an apple.
The girl, who did not recognize the evil queen, accepted the apple and took a bite.
But the apple was poisoned.
When the dwarfs came home they found Snow White lying on the ground.
They were very sad as she was no longer breathing. The dwarfs made a glass
coffi n and put the girl inside.
One day a prince fell in love with the sleeping girl. The dwarfs wanted to
carry the coffi n to his castle. Suddenly they stumbled, the piece of poisoned
apple dislodged and Snow White opened her eyes. The prince took her to
his castle where they lived happily ever after.
