rooster flew up and sat on the cat’s head. At a signal the four
began to make their music: the donkey brayed, the dog barked,
the cat meowed, and the rooster crowed. Then they crashed
through the window into the room, terrifying the robbers in the
process. The petrified robbers quickly fled out into the woods. So
then the donkey, dog, cat and rooster sat down at the table and
happily ate to their heart’s content. When they were finished,
they put out the light and chose a cozy place to sleep.
From a distance the robbers saw that the house appeared to
have gone quiet and sent one of them back to investigate. The
robber went into the house and was going to turn on a light
when he saw the cat´s glowing eyes. The cat jumped onto his
face and scratched at him with all her force. The robber tried to
flee through the back door, but the dog was lying there and bit
him in the leg. Still in flight, to speed him on his way, the donkey
gave him a heavy blow with his hoof and the rooster crowed full
volume into the night “Cock-a-doodle-doo”.
Terribly frightened the robber ran back to his gang and reported
that there was a horrible witch in the house who had scratched
his face with her long finger; that a man at the door had stabbed
him in the leg with a knife. And that a big black monster was
lying in the yard and had struck him with a wooden club, while
the judge had called from the roof: “Bring the rascal here!”.
From that time on the robbers did not dare go back to the house.
However the four Bremen Musicians liked it there so much that
they never left it again and lived there happily ever after
