Problem Possible Cause The Simple Solution to the Problem
The coffee is too cold. The appliance was not preheated. Always wait before brewing the espresso for the appliance to reach
operating temperature and the heating indicator to turn off.
The cups were not preheated. The warming plate (ontop of the appliance) is heated as soon as
you turn on the appliance. Place your coffee mugs there for some
time before brewing espresso.
The milk is not hot enough (for
Cappuccino or Latté).
Use the milk frothing hug for the preparation of milk froth and
hold the hand during operation at the bottom of the jug. If the
bottom of the jug is too hot to touch, the milk is at the right
temperature.
No crema The coffee is not pressed firmly
enough.
Tamp the ground espresso more firmly in the filter; see: ›Useful
Tips‹.
The espresso grind is too coarse. Ensure you use a suitable espresso grind. Ground coffee is
marked accordingly.
The ground coffee is no longer
fresh.
Keep ground coffee no longer than 1 week in an airtight vessel.
The filter pores are clogged. Clean the filter. You can clear the pores of the filter with the
cleaning tool; see ›Care and Cleaning‹.
The appliance makes pul-
sating, pumping noises
during brewing or when
frothing the milk.
These are the normal operating
noise of the appliance.

The appliance does not
generate steam.
The appliance is not turned on. Make sure that the appliance is plugged in and turned on (power
indicator is illuminated).
The water tank is empty. Fill fresh cold water into the water tank.
The steam position has not yet
been selected.
Turn the steam control switch to the steam position;
The steam wand is clogged. Allow the steam wand to cool, remove the attachment and try to
open the steam wand with the cleaning tool. Remove the steam
wand and clean the steam wand according to the instructions in the
section ›Care and Cleaning‹.
The milk does not froth
up.
The appliance does not develop
enough steam.

The milk is not fresh or not cold
enough.
The milk must be fresh and cold. See: ›Frothing milk‹.
