14. Bicycle chain
and sprocket
Bicycle chain maintenance
Bicycle chains are wearing parts. The degree of
wear varies considerably. Have the chain of your
FLYER regularly checked by your FLYER special-
ist retailer.
Hub gears: approx. 3000 km
Chain gears: 1500-2000 km
A worn bike chain can break and cause
very serious falls. Worn bicycle chains
must therefore immediately be changed
by your FLYER specialist retailer.
Regularly care for your bicycle chain by cleaning
and greasing it. These measures reduce prema-
ture wear.
To ensure that the chain and gears can
work safely, the chain must have a cer-
tain level of tension. Chain gear systems
tense the chain automatically. In the
case of hub gears, chains which are too
loose must be tightened. It might other-
wise jump off the gears and lead to a fall.

The axle nuts and the brake anchor
plate of back pedal brakes must be cor-
rectly fastened after each chain adjust-
ment process.
The chain may only be tightened once
the electrical system has been switched
off and the battery has been removed. If
the chain of your FLYER e-bike has fall-
en off the chain ring or sprocket, it is es-
sential to switch off the electrical system
and remove the battery before placing
the chain back on the gear wheels.
15. Brake
Brakes are vital to your safety on the bi-
cycle. Have the setting and maintenance
work performed by your FLYER special-
ist retailer. Only original spare parts may
be used. Otherwise it is possible that the
functionality of your FLYER e-bike may
be impacted or damaged. No modica-
tions of the brake system are permitted.
The braking effect of modern brakes is
very strong. You must get used to the
braking performance of the new brakes.
Activate the brake carefully. You should
practise emergency braking in a safe,
trafc-free area so that you can safely
handle your FLYER even during very in-
tense braking manoeuvres.
Do not brake continuously or too hard on
long downhill section, as your brakes
might overheat leading to reduced brak-
ing power. Alternate between applying
the front and back brake on long and
steep downhill sections to allow the oth-
er brake to cool. It is preferable to brake
sharply for a shorter time when taking
bends or if you are riding too fast. This
allows the brakes to cool down in the
meantime. This preserves your braking
power. The only exception is if you are
cycling in slippery conditions such as on
sand or a smooth surface. You should
then exercise great care, slowing your-
self down using the rear brake. Other-
wise there is the risk of the front wheel
slipping out to the side and causing a
