Straight Stitch

The straight stitch is used to sew a seam in woven

fabrics and may also be used for gathering, basting,

sewing in a zipper, pintucks, rolled hems and twin

needle hems.

NOTE: Fine fabrics should have a stitch length be-

tween 1.5 and 2.5, medium fabrics between 2.0 and

3.0 and heavier fabrics between 3.0 and 4.0.

Starting To Sew

Raise the presser foot and position the fabric next to

a seam allowance line on the needle plate. Lower

the needle to the point where sewing is to begin.

Pull the threads under the foot towards the back and

lower the presser foot. Press the foot control. Gently

guide the fabric along the seam allowance line letting

the fabric feed naturally.

Finishing Off a Seam

To fasten the threads at the end of a seam, press

and hold the reverse stitch lever while sewing.

Raise the presser foot. Use the flywheel to bring the

needle to its highest position before moving the fab-

ric. Remove the fabric; pull the threads up and into

thread cutter to cut them the proper length to start

the next seam.

Changing Sewing Direction

Begin sewing and stop when you reach the point

where you want to turn the fabric. Using the flywheel,

bring the needle down into the fabric.

Raise the presser foot.

Pivot the fabric around the needle to change the

sewing direction. Lower the presser foot and con-

tinue sewing.
