7 EQ 1 Equalizer
The EQ1 is an equalizer that allows both amplification/attenuation, as well as the
frequency to be set. This enables a wide variety of applciations and makes the
EQ1 very flexible.
This filter enables you to compensate for acoustic peculiarities of the room.
On the one hand, room resonance that, for example, produces a peak at a discrete frequency (humming or a
booming bass) can be suppressed. With the aid of two parameters ("EQ 1 Frequency" and "EQ 1 Level") the fre-
quency of the room resonance and the attenuation in dB are set. For an ideal equalization a CD with test signals
especially with sinus ones in the base range – is useful. Preferably, you should use the ELAC Cara test CD for this.
The presetting of the filter should be: “EQ 1 Frequency” to 120Hz, “EQ 1 Level” to minimum attenuation, i.e. 0dB.
Sinus tones will now be played from the CD, starting with the highest frequency. The CD contains several sequen-
tial tracks, on which sinus tones with ever lower frequencies are archived, down to 20 Hz. A frequency that sounds
unnaturally loud represents the room resonance. Now find the frequency corresponding to the track in the CD
booklet and set “EQ 1 Frequency” to this value. The attenuation should be experimentally determined, starting from
the strongest attenuation, step by step back to the minimum, until the attenuation frequency produces the same
apparent loudness in the room as all the other frequencies.
Important:
If you are the owner of a SUB 2080 D, then the EQ 2 (room resonance filter) described below is available for han-
dling peaks in the frequency range. This should be used as the first resort.
If, when listening to the test CD, another frequency that produces a peak is noticeable, this can be eliminated with
the EQ1.
On the other hand, frequency ranges can also be specifically reinforced with the EQ1. If, for example, when equal-
izing with the test CD or listening tests, you notice a frequency that is unnaturally quiet, then reinforce this with the
EQ 1. If you have used a test CD, then set the “EQ 1 Frequency” to the measured frequency. The attenuation
should be experimentally determined, starting from the neutral setting (“EQ 1 Level” to 0dB), increased step by
step to the maximum reinforcement, until the attenuated frequency produces the same apparent loudness in the
room as all the other frequencies.
The EQ1 offers the option, besides equalizing room effects, of adjusting the tonality of the subwoofer to your per-
sonal preferences. Thus desired frequency ranges can be emphasized or reduced.
To set the mean frequency of the filter, go to the rotation menu with one of the outer arrow keys to select EQ 1
Frequency”. By pressing the selector key in the middle, you arrive at frequency selection. Now select the required
crossover frequency with one of the outer arrow keys and return to the rotation menu by pressing the selector key.
Your selected frequency will now be shown.
To set the attenuation of the filter, go to the rotation menu with one of the outer arrow keys to select “EQ 1 Level”.
By pressing the selector key in the middle, you arrive at the attenuation selection. Now select the required attenua-
tion with one of the outer arrow keys, and return to the rotation menu by pressing the selector key. Your selected
attenuation will now be shown.
