7 SPEAKER LEVEL IN
Input jacks for connecting the ELAC subwoofer to the loudspeaker output of a power amp or surround receiver
(please see following chapter). Bass signals, that go to the LINE LEVEL IN & SPEAKER LEVEL IN are both re-
produced through the subwoofer. The SPEAKER LEVEL IN uses a floating, symmetrical circuit designed to make
the subwoofer operate like a passive loudspeaker. This way, power amplifiers with bridged (BTL) circuits can be
connected without danger. In comparison to passive loudspeakers the subwoofer input impedance is very high
(approx 100 times higher than a passive speaker). This allows parallel connection of both passive speakers and
the SUB 2040 without significantly lowering the impedance presented to the power amp or AV receiver. This also
means that large diameter cables and ‘exotic’ cables will provide little advantage due to the subwoofer’s high im-
pedance. When connecting speaker cables into the terminals provided be extremely careful to avoid touching the
cables together and causing a short circuit. Also be careful that stray speaker wire strands do not touch each oth-
er.
8 ROOM TUNING FILTER
This filter is used to optimize the bass reproduction in the room. A notch filter is used for suppressing room reso-
nances, which cause an audible bass increase at certain frequencies (e.g. "boomy" bass). By using two controls
("ROOM TUNING FREQUENCY" and "ROOM TUNING LEVEL") the frequency and damping (in decibels) can be
adjusted. For optimum adjustment a CD containing test signals would be helpful (especially sine waves in the
bass range). Best results will be gained using the ELAC Cara Test CD. To start with, set "ROOM TUNING FRE-
QUENCY" to the minimum frequency and "ROOM TUNING LEVEL" to 0 dB. The CD contains descending sine
waves from 100 Hz down to 20 Hz on separate tracks. Start by playing the highest frequency and continue on to
lower frequencies in order. There will be one frequency which seems to be much louder than the others. This will
be the room resonance. Check the CD booklet to determine the corresponding frequency. Turn the "ROOM TUN-
ING FREQUENCY" actuator to that frequency. The damping must be determined experimentally. Start at the
highest damping (-18 dB) and turn the actuator back to 0 dB step by step until the damped frequency has the
same acoustic level as all other frequencies within the room.
9 POWER SOCKET
Please insert the IEC end of the mains power lead here.
10 POWER (ON / OFF)
Once both mains and signal cables are connected, turn on the power switch. When absent for a long period, turn
off the power switch to avoid electricity consumption.
11 FUSE HOLDER
When replacing fuses, make sure to use appropriate fuses (please refer to the information given on the rear of the
speaker).
ATTENTION: Complete disconnection of the ELAC SUB 2040 subwoofer from the mains is ensured only
by pulling out the power plug. While the device is plugged in and the power switch is switched on, a static
current will flow even in standby mode (indicated by the LED glowing red).
