Please note the following guidelines when selecting and locating the AIS VHF antenna:
T
he VHF antenna should be located as high as possible and positioned as far from other antennas as
possible.
T
he VHF antenna should have omnidirectional vertical polarisation.
Whe
re possible the VHF antenna should be installed at least 3m (10ft) away from other transmitting
radio, satellite and RADAR antennas.
Ide
ally the AIS VHF antenna should be mounted directly above or below the ship’s primary VHF
radiotelephone antenna, with no horizontal separation and with a minimum of 2m vertical separation.
If it is located on the same horizontal level as other antennas, the distance apart should be at least
10m. Refer to Figure 41 for further guidance.
T
he VHF antenna cable should be kept as short as possible to minimise signal loss. High quality. low
loss coaxial cable appropriate to the installation location should be used.
T
he VHF antenna cable should be terminated in a PL-259 co-axial connector for connection to the
AIS transceiver.
An
y outdoor installed connectors in the antenna cables should be waterproof by design.
An
tenna cables should be installed in separate signal cable channels at least 10cm (4ins) away from
power supply cables. Crossing of cables should be done at right angles and sharp bends in the
antenna cables should be avoided.
Co
nnect the VHF antenna cable to the VHF connector on the AIS transceiver as shown in Figure 42.
