A interpretação indicada no visor é aplicável aos adultos a partir dos 20 anos de idade.
Para crianças, existem tabelas diferentes.
Se o índice BMI de um adulto estiver entre 25 a 29,9, a pessoa deverá ponderar estabilizar o seu
peso ou, melhor ainda, perder um pouco de peso para impedir a obesidade e as respectivas doen-
ças daí resultantes.
No segmento da classificação “excesso de peso” é recomendável uma redução de peso permanen-
te nos seguintes casos:
- patologia existente relacionada com o excesso de peso (por ex. hipertensão arterial,
diabetes mellitus tipo II),
- distribuição desfavorável da gordura (aumento de peso na barriga = obesidade andróide,
barriga proeminente)
- patologias existentes que se agravam pelo excesso de peso (por ex. problemas de costas
ou articulações, asma)
- elevada pressão de ansiedade psicossocial
Nota: Para crianças e jovens dos 5 aos 19 anos de idade, são classificados, com base na
definição da OMS, os seguintes valores referenciais:
