Volwassenen moeten bij een BMI-bereik tussen 25 en 29,9 streven naar een gewichtsstabilisatie of
een lichte gewichtsdaling, om obesitas en bijkomende aandoeningen te voorkomen.
Een langdurige gewichtsafname in het bereik van overgewicht is echter aan te raden bij:
- al aanwezige, aan overgewicht gerelateerde aandoeningen (bijv. hoge bloeddruk, diabetes
mellitus type II),
- ongunstige vetverdeling (gewichtstoename bij de buik = “appeltype
”
)
- bestaande aandoeningen die door overgewicht worden verergerd
(bijv. rug- of gewichtsproblemen, astma)
- grote psychosociale klachten
