W przypadku wskaźnika BMI w przedziale od 25 do 29,9 osoby dorosłe powinny podjąć działania

w celu ustabilizowania lub lekkiego obniżenia masy ciała, aby uniknąć nadwagi i chorób jej

towarzyszących.

Trwała utrata masy ciała dla osób z nadwagą jest zalecana w przypadku:

- choroby spowodowanej nadwagą (np. nadciśnienia, cukrzycy typu 2),

- niekorzystnego rozłożenia tkanki tłuszczowej (nagromadzenie się tłuszczu w okolicy brzucha =

„typ jabłka”)

- chorób, które z powodu nadwagi mogą się pogłębiać (np. problemy z kręgosłupem lub stawami, astma)

- wysokiego poziomu dyskomfortu psychicznego
