Yetişkinler, obezite veya takip eden hastalıkları önlemek için 25 ila 29,9 arasındaki bir BMI aralığında

kilosunu sabitlemeyi veya biraz azaltmayı hedeflemelidir.

Aşırı kilo aralığında kalıcı bir kilo verme şu durumlarda önerilir:

- zaten mevcut olan, aşırı kilo sebepli hastalık (örn. yüksek tansiyon, diabetes mellitus tip II),

- kötü yağ dağılımı (göbekte kilo birikmesi = “elma tipi”)

- aşırı kiloyla kötüleşen mevcut hastalıklar (örn. sırt veya eklem sorunları, astım)

- yüksek psikososyal gerilim
