ROLLER BRAKES
These brakes require little maintenance
and are optimally sealed against dust
and water. If the brake grips can be
squeezed in more than half of the dis-
tance between the grip and the hand-
lebars, the cable must be tightened.
This can be carried out with the cable
adjusting screw on the brake grip (30).
Roller brakes have a brake power
limiter for extra safety. When the
roller brake is squeezed, it is possible
that the bicycle still moves forwards
or backwards a short distance. It may
feel as though the bearing is not cor-
rectly adjusted. However, your bicycle
is probably perfectly alright because
this play is normal in this type of brake
construction. The play prevents acci-
dents wherever possible. If you have
any doubts, however, we advise you to
consult your Batavus dealer.
THE WHEELS
LIGHT AND STRONG
A bicycle wheel is a wonderful piece of
technology. The rim, hub and spokes
(together with the rim band, inner
tube and tyre) jointly form an extre-
mely light yet strong wheel. It is the
most important factor in ensuring that
a bicycle rides smoothly. Various factors
play a role in producing a light easy
ride: fi rm tyres, taut spokes and a well-
adjusted hub which is free from play.
You can take care of the fi rst factor
yourself, the latter two are in good
hands with your Batavus dealer.
THE SPOKES
Spokes are essential components of
your wheels. Too little tension on
the spokes can be detrimental to the
stability of the bicycle or, in time, lead
to spokes breaking. Tensioning spokes
is a very precise job. It is therefore
advisable to leave this to your Batavus
dealer. The spokes must be adjusted a
few weeks after the purchase of your
bicycle (but you must have cycled a few
hundred kilometres on it by then).
• If the wheel has a wobble or loose
spokes, your Batavus dealer will correct
this quickly so that further damage to
the wheel is prevented.
• Have your dealer check the tension in
the spokes regularly after that.
• In some bicycles the aluminium rims
are equipped with a ‘Safetyline’. This
is a wear indicator which shows when
the rim is worn. After a lot of intensive
braking, the side of the rim wears such
that a strip eventually becomes visible
(or the groove becomes invisible). This
means that the rim must be replaced.
The Batavus dealer will be happy to
help you here.
MENDING A PUNCTURE
1. After having protected the saddle
and handlebars against damage, place
the bicycle upside down, if possible.
It is also possible to place the bicycle
(well protected) on its side such that
the wheel with the puncture can turn
freely.
2. Check the tyre for small stones,
pieces of glass or perhaps a nail. When
you remove the offending stone, glass
or nail, the location of the puncture
may immediately become apparent
(check the inside of the tyre later for
metal splinters etc., too).
3. Remove the valve and the rim nut.
Press the edge of the tyre to the middle
of the rim. Place the fi rst tyre lever bet-
ween the tyre and the edge of the rim
(not in the vicinity of the valve). Wedge
the tyre lever behind a spoke.
4. Wedge the second tyre lever in place
two spokes further up. Repeat with
the third tyre lever (again two spokes
further). Remove the rest of the tyre
with your hand (31).
5. Press the valve holder inwards,
remove the inner tube and pump it up.
In the case of a large puncture you will
hear air escaping. A smaller puncture
