pull brake, in order to slacken the cable
(9).
3. Now you can easily loosen the bolts
(D) which fi x the blocks in position (9).
When mounting and adjusting new
brake blocks they should be 1-2 mm
from the rim.
4. Tighten the brake release (C) again
(9). The fi ne adjustment of the brake
block play is carried out with the aid of
the cable adjusting bolt (A) on the side
pull brake (9). The Shimano side pull
brake has a centring adjusting screw (B)
with which you can centre the whole
brake (9).
5. The brakes are correctly adjusted
if the brake grips can be squeezed no
further than a quarter to a half of the
distance to the handlebars. If you can
squeeze them further in, the brake
cable must be adjusted.
6. You can do so by loosening the cable
clamping bolt (on the back of the bra-
ke release) with a hexagonal key and
pulling the brake cable up slightly with
a pair of combination pliers. This cable
clamping bolt must also be loosened if
the brake cable has to be replaced at
any time.
7. If the above causes problems, re-
member that this is a routine job for
your Batavus dealer.
THE WHEELS
LIGHT AND STRONG
A bicycle wheel is a wonderful piece of
technology. The rim, hub and spokes
(together with the rim band, inner
tube and tyre) jointly form an extre-
mely light yet strong wheel. This is the
most important factor in ensuring that
a bicycle rides smoothly. Various factors
play a role in producing a light easy
ride: fi rm tyres, taut spokes and a well-
adjusted hub which is free from play.
You can take care of the fi rst factor
yourself, the latter two are in good
hands with your Batavus dealer.
WIRE BEAD TYRES
Your Batavus racing bicycle is equipped
with wire bead tyres (wired tyre com-
bined with a separate inner tube).
REMOVING THE FRONT WHEEL
1. Slacken the brake cable by turning
the brake release (C) (9).
2. Stand in front of the front wheel
and slacken (A) the quick release lever
of the hub (11).
3. Slide the wheel out of the fork ends.
REPLACING THE FRONT WHEEL
1. Place the front wheel between the
fork ends. The handle of the quick
release lever must now (from your
standpoint) be on the right side of the
front fork.
2. Tighten the quick release lever of
the axle. When you tighten the quick
release lever, the handle turns 180º. It
meets with resistance during a third
of this distance and not during the
remaining two thirds. Your Batavus
dealer will be happy to show you how
it works.
3. Keep the position of the handle pa-
rallel to the front fork when tightening
it.
4. Increase the tension on the brake
cable again by tightening the brake
release (B) (11).
5. Check whether the brakes are wor-
king properly and whether the wheel is
in the middle!
REMOVING THE REAR WHEEL
1. Shift the chain to the smallest sproc-
ket wheel (rear).
2. Slacken the brake cable by turning
the brake release (C) (9).
3. Stand behind the rear wheel and
loosen (A) the quick release lever of the
hub (11).
4. Pull the derailleur backwards.
5. Slide the wheel out of the fork ends.
6. Hang the bicycle (preferably in ad-
vance) on a hook or lay the bicycle on
