Original Operating Manual 1-2013

Check the brake and gear functioning before you make a first test ride. Only when everything is
right, you can use your bike again. Otherwise, get in contact with a professional bicycle repair
shop or your ave. dealer.
Tires (Marathon)
ave. Hybrid bikes are equipped with impervious tires (Kevlar protection) of high quality
Schwalbe Marathon PLUS (flat-less)
Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard (puncture protection 5)
Schwalbe Energizer PLUS
Schwalbe Smart Sam
Schwalbe Rapid Rob
Schwalbe Racing Ralph
Schwalbe Big Apple
Profiles and load of the tires are adapted to the application areas Touring, Sports, Off-Road/
Xtreme and Mobility. Thus e.g. Marathon and Energizer are optimized for good running on the
roads and paths or Smart Sam for sports and 29“ Rapid Rob for terrains.
Example: Smart Sam Marathon 29“ Rapid Rob
If you use your bike/tires in a driving environment for which they are not optimized, you should
adjust your driving style accordingly. The tires can bear different surfaces, weather conditions
and temperatures, but if you get into situations for which the tires are not suitable, there is
more risk of failure.
Thus, smooth tires with low profile can easily spin off on a wet road or in dirty terrain. On the
other hand, knobby tires are well-suited off-road, but at higher speed on asphalt roads or in an
emergency stop they could cause problems. The tires fit is also limited in winter applications. In
extreme cold, ice and snow, you should use winter or studded tires (licensed for cycling on the
roads). For more information see http://www.schwalbe.de/engl/
IMPORTANT: Drive your tires always with the recommended air pressure (see value at shell
side). The information is provided usually in bar’ or ‘psi' (minimum pressure is 2.5 bar). The
normal operating pressure, depending on tire width, is at 3 to 4 bar for 70 kg load. For higher
weight (rider + load) the tire pressure should be increased (for +10 kg about 0.2 bar).
An underinflated tire tend to poor running characteristics (swim, swing), and can lead to
increased wear and tear, hose hiking, demolition of the valve or the casing. Excessive tire
pressure reduces the rolling resistance, but could diminish the traction and makes driving ‘hard’.
In an emergency high pressure tires may burst.
