Personal Safety User Guide - January 2022
How to control who can access your location
With your permission, Location Services allows apps (including Maps, Camera, Weather,
and others) and websites to use information from cellular, Wi-Fi, Global Positioning System
(GPS) networks, and Bluetooth to determine your approximate location. The first time
an app tries to access your location, it must ask for your permission. You see a prompt
explaining which app is asking for permission to use your location as well as the app
developers reason for requesting it.
When an app is using Location Services, the Location Services icon appears In The
status bar at the top of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch screen and In The menu bar on
your Mac. When you set up a device, you’re asked if you want to turn on Location Services.
After you’ve completed setup, You can turn Location Services on or off at any time.
Even if you disable Location Services, third-party apps and websites may still use other
ways to determine your location. For safety, your Mac computers location information
may be used for emergency calls to aid response efforts regardless of whether you enable
Location Services.
Note: If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location isn’t sent to
Apple. To deliver relevant search suggestions, Apple may use the IP address of your
internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region.
To stop sharing your location with all apps and services
1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and
turn off location sharing.
This stops all apps on your device, such as Maps, from using your location. No one
is notified if you turn off Location Services, but features may not work as expected
without access to your location.
2. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Security and Privacy >
Privacy > Location Services > and deselect Enable Location Services. You may need to
first unlock System Preferences to make changes. To do this, click the Lock button
In The bottom-left corner, then enter your password.
Manage Location Services for individual apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can also grant or revoke access to your location for individual apps and indicate how
often it may use your location.
1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and review or change access settings
for an app or to see its explanation for requesting Location Services, tap the app.
2. To allow an app to use your specific location, leave Precise Location turned on. To share
only your approximate location—which may be sufficient for an app that doesn’t need
your exact location— You can turn Precise Location off.
Note: If you set the access for an app to Ask Next Time, you’re asked to turn on
Location Services agaIn The next time an app tries to use it.
