Personal Safety User Guide - January 2022
Share or stop sharing your location
The Find My app for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac (and the Find People/Find Items
apps in Apple Watch) helps keep you connected to your devices even if they are lost or
stolen, and allows you and your family and friends to share locations with each other.
You can use Find My to locate your friends and family and to share your location with them
(your location isn’t shared by default). Share My Location—In The Me tab—must be on to
share your location with friends, family, and contacts.
To see who you’re sharing your location with, go to the People tab in Find My. The people
listed in this tab have either shared their location with you, or you’ve shared your location
with them, or both. When someone shares their location with you, You can choose to share
your location back, or not.
If you set up Family Sharing and use Location Sharing, your family members automatically
appear In The People tab, although they still have to share their location with you.
See Manage Family Sharing settings.
Stop sharing using Find My
You can stop sharing your location with a particular person by choosing that person In The
People tab, then scrolling down and choosing Stop Sharing My Location. Or You can stop
sharing with everyone by turning off Share My Location In The Me tab.
Important: If you initially shared your location from iMessage rather than Find My, and
stop sharing, the person you stop sharing with receives a banner in iMessage that you’ve
stopped sharing your location. If you began sharing from Find My, and then stop sharing
your location through Find My, the person won’t be able to see you on their list of friends.
If you reenable sharing, they get a notification that you’ve started sharing your location
with them.
