The service life of a filter depends on many factors such as type of compressor,
type of oil, amount of condensate, temperature of condensate etc. It cannot be
determined in advance for individual applications. We recommend to visually
control the discharging condensate regularly and to exchange the activated coal
filter if necessary (see “Test and maintenance”).
5. TEST AND MAINTENANCE
General information:
Environmental control officers will want to see proof of the regular control and
servicing of the separator. The test and service log will help the user to keep a
regular note of the performance and service of the device. There is a pocket on
the apparatus where this log can be kept.
After the initial operation we recommend to take test samples in regular
intervals, e.g. every week. Changing appearance of the samples indicate the
remaining service life of the filter. This is an easy way for you, to ascertain in
your particular case how often the filters have to be checked and when they
have to be replaced.
Optical test of the filtrate:
1) Fill the testglass about one half from the sample valve.
2) Replace lid and hold bottom-up against the light.
a) Compare water sample with the matted reference zone on the glass.
b) If the cloudiness of the sample is equal or greater than the zone on the
testglass, the filter has to be replaced.
3) Note the test result in the log.
Testing the filtrate with oil test paper:
1) Move the paper back and forth a few times in the test solution.
2) Shake the paper to remove the water drops.
3) Pay attention to the colour reaction; the paper turns dark blue on contact with
hydrocarbons, particularly gasoline, heating oil and lubrication oil etc.
a) a few little blue spots on the paper: oil rests less than 1-5 mg/litre
condensate.
b) paper turns light blue: oil rests ca. 5-20 mg/litre condensate.
c) paper turns very blue: oil rests more than 20 mg/litre condensate.
4) Note the test result in the log.
The test paper only works on non emulsified oils!
