Cluster
Zuordnungseinheit eines Laufwerksspeichers, um Dateien in einem Dateisystem zu speichern.
Jede Datei, die nicht leer ist, belegt komplett einen oder mehrere Cluster.
Die typische Größe eines Clusters beträgt 4 KB. Wenn Sie ein Volume formatieren, können Sie dessen
Clustergröße wählen.
Kleinere Clustergrößen ermöglichen eine effizientere Speicherung kleinerer Dateien, indem die
Menge an verschwendetem Laufwerksspeicher reduziert wird; größere Dateien können jedoch über
das Volume stärker fragmentiert vorliegen, was wiederum die Zugriffszeit auf diese Dateien erhöhen
kann.
Ein Cluster wird außerdem als Zuordnungseinheit bezeichnet.
Physikalisch entspricht ein Cluster einem oder mehreren Sektoren (üblicherweise 8) auf einem
Laufwerk.

Eine Datenzusammenstellung, wie etwa ein Textdokument, die unter einem Identifikationsnamen
gespeichert wird – beispielsweise: Dokument.txt
Dateien werden in einem Dateisystem (S. 91) auf einem Volume gespeichert. In unterschiedlichen
Dateisystemen können Dateien auf verschiedene Art gespeichert sein, mit unterschiedlichen
Vorgaben für Dateinamen und unterschiedlichen Arten, wie der vollständige Pfad zu der Datei in den
Ordner (S. 97)-Baum geschrieben wird.
Dateisystem
Datenstruktur, die zum Speichern und Verwalten von Dateien (S. 91) auf einem Volume verwendet
wird.
Ein Dateisystem überwacht den freien und belegten Speicherplatz, unterstützt Ordner (S. 97) und
Dateinamen, und speichert die physikalischen Positionen von Dateien auf einem Laufwerk.
Beispiele für von Windows unterstützte Dateisysteme sind FAT16 (auch einfach nur FAT genannt),
FAT32 und NTFS.
Beispiele für von Linux unterstützte Dateisysteme sind ext2 und ext3.
Wenn Sie ein Volume formatieren (S. 93), können Sie dessen Dateisystem wählen.
Defragmentierung
Prozess, um die Dateien eines Volumes zur Verringerung ihrer Fragmentierung (S. 94) neu zu
rearrangieren, was zu einer verbesserten Zugriffszeit führen kann.
